Lloyd's List is a shipping news publication and one of the world's oldest newspapers, with a history spanning over 300 years.
Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City seaport ranked 22nd in the above ranking, with an output of more than 9.1 million Teu (in 2024), an increase of 23.8% compared to 2023. Thus, Ho Chi Minh City seaport increased 3 places compared to the ranking in 2024.
Next, Vietnam's Hai Phong seaport holds the 29th position in the ranking, with cargo throughput in 2024 reaching about 7.1 million TEUs, an increase of 12.8% compared to 2023. With this achievement, Hai Phong seaport has increased 4 places compared to last year.
Similarly, Cai Mep seaport rose to 30th place, up 4 places compared to the 2024 ranking, with more than 7 million TEUs of cargo (up 29.2% compared to 2023).
According to Lloyd's List, Vietnam's shipping industry has seen a surge in cargo throughput over the past year, largely due to the impact of US-China trade tensions. This has forced many investors and shipping lines to diversify their supply chains in Southeast Asia.
The report also shows that the total volume of goods passing through 100 container ports reached 743.6 million TEUs, up 8.1% over the previous year. Notably, Vietnam, along with countries such as India and Türkiye, are emerging markets that have taken advantage of supply chain restructuring and regional trade agreements.
Previously, according to the ranking announcement of DynaLiners Millionaires, the three seaports of Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and Cai Mep were also among the top 50 seaports handling the largest container volume in the world in 2024. This achievement placed Vietnam 6th in the list of countries with seaports handling large container volumes.
3 largest seaports in Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and Cai Mep seaports are the three largest seaports in Vietnam, classified as special ports. Among them, Hai Phong and Cai Mep seaports are planned to be gateway ports combined with international transit, receiving large container ships entering and leaving the port to load goods, while helping to reduce logistics costs.
Hai Phong Port is known as a national-level comprehensive seaport complex, the second largest in Vietnam (after Saigon Port) and the largest in the North. This is the international gateway of Vietnam. Notably, the Lach Huyen port complex is being completed, bringing a new stature to Hai Phong seaport.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time Cai Mep port cluster has been honored. Specifically, in early June 2024, the news that Cai Mep port cluster was ranked 7th in the world by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence in terms of the CPPI (Container Port Performance Index) caused a stir in the maritime industry. This achievement of Cai Mep port cluster surprised when it surpassed major international transit ports such as Yokohama - Japan (9th), Hong Kong (China, 15th), Singapore (17th).
Seaports play an essential role in Vietnam's economic GDP, by being the main gateway for imports and exports, promoting international trade, attracting investment, creating jobs, supporting related industries (such as logistics, tourism), and connecting Vietnam to the global supply chain, thereby contributing to economic growth.
