Taking care of educational development in Khmer ethnic areas

In recent times, Soc Trang province has always paid attention to the development of ethnic minority areas, including the field of education and training. Through policies, support mechanisms, and investment capital for development, the education career in ethnic minority areas has had clear changes.

Soc Trang is a province with over 30% of the population being Khmer, the largest in the country. In recent times, in addition to investing in building infrastructure and taking care of the material and spiritual life of ethnic minorities, the province has also focused on implementing a policy of prioritizing investment in improving the quality of education in the Khmer ethnic minority area with many programs and projects to preserve the language and writing of the ethnic minorities.

In order to create favorable conditions for Khmer ethnic students, in the 2024-2025 school year, teachers and students of My Thuan B Primary School, My Thuan Commune (My Tu District, Soc Trang Province) were invested in spacious facilities and many teaching equipment. Mr. Duong Thanh Loc - Principal of My Thuan B Primary School said that the whole school has 577 students, of which 90% are Khmer ethnic students. The school organizes bilingual teaching (Vietnamese and Khmer) for students in all grades. Khmer ethnic students are exempted from tuition fees and supported with study expenses of 150,000 VND/month. “Thanks to the attention of superiors, the school's facilities have been invested in to become more and more spacious and modern, meeting the teaching and learning needs of teachers and students. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school mobilized benefactors to support bicycles, uniforms, books... for ethnic minority students with difficult conditions and parents working far away with a total cost of 120 million VND, contributing to taking care of learning conditions for disadvantaged students" - Mr. Duong Thanh Loc shared.

Thach Truong, a 5th grader at My Thuan B Primary School, said his family is in difficult circumstances, his parents work far away. With the school’s support of a bicycle and 150,000 VND/month, he is very excited and feels secure in studying.

Secretary of My Tu District Party Committee Pham Tuan said that the Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee of Soc Trang province determined that ensuring social security and developing education in the Khmer ethnic minority region is a task that goes hand in hand with socio -economic development. Thereby, improving the material life and intellectual level of the Khmer ethnic minority.

Mr. Danh Hoang Nguyen - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Soc Trang province said that the Department coordinated with the Ethnic Minorities Committee to submit to the Provincial People's Committee a plan to implement Resolution No. 17 dated December 16, 2019 of the Provincial People's Council stipulating specific policies to support teachers of Khmer language and script. Resolution No. 17 is a specific policy of the province, demonstrating the attention of local Party committees and authorities to teachers of ethnic minority languages at pagodas and non-public educational institutions. Thereby, preserving and promoting the language and script of the Khmer ethnic people in the province.
