In recent years, farmers in Tran Van Thoi district have converted their mixed gardens to grow fruit trees, such as green-skinned pink-fleshed grapefruit, oranges, jackfruit, apples, etc., for multiple harvests throughout the year, bringing high economic efficiency. In the dry season, farmers proactively take measures to care for, irrigate, and protect their gardens safely, ensuring productivity and fruit quality.
Mr. Le Vu Phong (Kinh Hang A hamlet, Khanh Hung commune) has nearly 100 pink-fleshed green-skinned grapefruit trees and more than 100 pear guava trees. His 6-year-old orchard has been yielding fruit for 2 years now. Mr. Phong shared: “The first year, guava and grapefruit yielded nearly 4 tons, last year the yield was higher, nearly 5 tons. I built high ridges to limit flooding in the rainy season, and stored water in the canals for irrigation in the dry season. I invested in an automatic irrigation system to save water and reduce the effort, used essential oils to prevent pests, biological products, organic fertilizers, potassium, composted water hyacinth, and straw around the base, kept low grass covering the base and ground to keep the soil moist, reduced drainage, pruned branches, flowers, and fruits during hot weather to reduce the water needs of the trees so that the trees are healthy and produce quality fruit”.
The 300-tree grapefruit garden planted on an area of 1.2 hectares of Mr. Lam Van Viet's family (Cong Nghiep C hamlet, Khanh Hung commune) is now 7 years old and has been harvested for 2 years. The grapefruit garden this year has a yield nearly 30% higher than the previous year, so his family is very excited. Currently, his family is still harvesting to deliver to traders and markets in and outside the district. Mr. Viet shared: “The grapefruit garden bears fruit every month, rotating each row. Last year, it yielded nearly 14 tons, over 6 tons during Tet alone, harvested from December 20 to the end of January 15. The best grapefruit is 35,000 VND/kg, the second grade is 30,000 VND/kg, the third grade is 25,000 VND/kg. I participate in Khanh Hung Clean Fruit Cooperative, following organic techniques, limiting pests and diseases, mainly adding organic fertilizer 2-3 times a year, keeping the plants healthy, the sweet areas are prone to water shortages in the dry season, need to ensure enough irrigation water, install an automatic misting system, save water, so even in the dry season, the grapefruit garden still produces high yield and quality fruit, which is favored by the market.”
Mr. Lam Van Viet's grapefruit garden yields year-round, nearly 14 tons each year, over 6 tons during Tet alone.
In Tran Van Thoi district, fruit orchards are highly economically efficient, contributing to improving the income and living standards of farmers in the district. Currently, the district has more than 200 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds, with a large demand for irrigation. Fruit trees are perennial crops, and farmers have to spend a lot of investment costs, effort, and time to have fruit-bearing orchards. Currently, the water source for agricultural production in the district is still adequate. However, in the dry season of 2024, the sweetening area in the district faces severe heat and drought, and dry canals. In such weather conditions, many types of fruit trees may have reduced productivity and be damaged if not provided with enough water and have appropriate care and protection measures.
Gardeners have been proactive in production, focusing on care, applying techniques to avoid damage and achieve efficiency. Fruit gardens produce good quality, delicious, clean fruit, beautiful appearance, and are favored by the market. Farmers also exchange, share, and learn from each other about planting experiences, care techniques, bringing efficiency, thereby improving productivity and increasing economic income.
Thanks to good care, application of techniques and organic production, the fruit gardens of Khanh Hung Clean Fruit Cooperative produce delicious and beautiful fruit.
The district's agricultural sector recommends and propagates that people regularly monitor weather information on mass media, depending on the situation to have appropriate response measures. At the same time, coordinate with functional sectors and local authorities to encourage and support farmers to renovate mixed gardens, plant fruit trees with characteristics, suitable to natural conditions, advantages of the region and locality, increase attention to support, guide farmers to build specialized areas for high-quality fruit trees, produce in an organic direction, apply technical solutions and effective methods to take good care of and protect the garden in the upcoming dry season. In addition, it is necessary to operate irrigation works well and regularly check and dredge canals to have enough water for irrigation, serving production./.
