On June 10, specialist doctor Le Tien Dung, Department of Digestive Surgery, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) said that recently this place received a very special case.

Patient A. (19 years old) was admitted to the hospital due to frequent vomiting and weight loss. Medical history revealed that for the past 6 months, symptoms of nausea and vomiting after eating had appeared, causing the patient to lose up to 12kg.

According to the family, the patient had a history of phone addiction and playing games, leading to irregular eating and staying up late. This caused severe gastroduodenal ulcers.

Upon admission, the X-ray results showed typical images of pyloric stenosis, a dilated stomach that prevented food from going down, stagnating in the small intestine; the patient's fat was also gone due to significant weight loss.

The patient was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis with duodenal ulcer complications, due to his gaming habits and irregular lifestyle. To treat the condition, the young man had a new path created by doctors (gastrojejunostomy) so that food could reach the stomach.

Two weeks after surgery, the patient started eating again, no longer vomited and gained weight.

Dr. Ho Huu Duc, Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, said that this was not a very complicated surgery.

But the patient had a severe malnutrition condition, so careful preparation was needed, with intravenous feeding support and intervention from the Nutrition Department, to increase the indicators to a level that allowed surgery.

“In these cases, the most feared thing is that the anastomosis after surgery will not heal due to malnutrition. Therefore, preoperative nutritional intervention is very important. After surgery, the patient is fed early to restore weight as soon as possible.

Patients can also suffer from “refeeding syndrome”, when they have been eating poorly for a while and are given massive amounts of nutrients, which can lead to death, due to sudden changes in blood trace elements,” the doctor analyzed.

According to statistics in 2024, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) received 12 cases of stomach perforation for patients aged 18-25. This is very worrying, because at this age, the stomach usually functions very well.

Doctors warn that the number of stomach ulcers in Vietnamese people is increasing, especially among young people, due to bad eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles such as staying up late, being addicted to phones and overusing TV and computer screens.

If not changed and intervened promptly, the patient may lead to complications such as stomach perforation, gastric bleeding, pyloric stenosis, and even cancer.
