Join 2 teams, support 32 houses

In 2022, after completing his military service, Mr. Loi became Deputy Secretary of the Vi Tan Commune Youth Union, Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang. After more than 4 years of working in the Youth Union, he found life more meaningful when he was able to help many people in difficult circumstances. Therefore, when the movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses was launched, he actively participated.

Mr. Loi joined two teams to remove temporary and dilapidated houses at Vi Thanh City Youth Union and Vi Tan Commune Youth Union at the same time. With the city-level team, he volunteered, helping to move furniture, dismantle houses, carry bricks, mix mortar... Up to now, he has supported 10 houses (some in the inner city, some had to walk through fields to get there).

Meanwhile, with the team to remove temporary and dilapidated houses in Vi Tan Commune, Mr. Loi's responsibility is somewhat heavier because he is the team leader. The team has 22 members, the main force being union members, youth and militia. According to him, Vi Tan commune has 49 temporary and dilapidated houses that need to be removed; of which 22 need support to repair and rebuild, and he is present to contribute to each one.

Mr. Loi believes that in the work of removing temporary and dilapidated houses, teamwork is very important. Everyone must unite, transmit positive energy and joy to each other. Because this work is hard and difficult, in some places it takes 1-2 days of continuous support to complete, especially when participating in this movement, one must accept to work in the sun, there are days when the sun is nearly 40 degrees Celsius, if not determined enough, it is easy to get discouraged.

Understanding that, Mr. Loi always tries to promote his leading role, inspiring his friends. "In the past time, I always prioritized the activity of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses. Typically, I changed the time to take care of 700 Thai jackfruit trees in my garden. I help people all day, so I can only go to the garden to water in the late afternoon or at night. That is more difficult and tiring, but I feel happy because I have done useful work for the community," he shared.

Wholeheartedly help people have a decent place to live

In the early days of establishing the team to remove temporary and dilapidated houses of Vi Tan Commune Union, Mr. Loi created a Zalo chat group for members to exchange information and plans. According to him, this activity is aimed at disadvantaged people in life such as poor households, near-poor households, single people, sick people, disabled people, policy families, etc. Therefore, the goal of the team is to try to provide maximum support to help people reduce their worries in the process of repairing their houses.

Mr. Loi shared that despite the difficult circumstances, the people were very kind. Many thoughtful people prepared breakfast for the whole team. "To help people not worry about this issue, I mobilized benefactors to support long-term bread for the members. In addition to bread, we brought our own water tanks to drink. The whole team did not want to bother people because they knew they were struggling to make a living," he confided.

In addition, Mr. Loi also saw many families struggling because they did not have the tools to dismantle their houses. So he mobilized the necessary tools such as wool, crowbar, hammer, pliers, etc. so that when they arrived at the location, they could start working right away. From this movement, he also started to mobilize gifts such as fans and rice cookers for families in need so that they could have a more decent place to live and work.

"Up to now, I have helped 5 households with rice cookers and electric fans; at the same time, I have mobilized many donations of necessities such as rice, instant noodles, soy sauce, fish sauce, etc. Although the gifts are small, many people shed tears when receiving them because they think they are very necessary in life," he confided.

Mr. Tran Van Nguyen (51 years old, living in Hamlet 3, Vi Tan Commune) expressed his gratitude to the volunteer team that cleared temporary and dilapidated houses of Vi Tan Commune Youth Union. With the newly renovated house, his family of 5 no longer has to rent a room. But at this time, everyone cannot move in because there is no bathroom or toilet. He really hopes that young people will support this work. Because doing it alone is very time-consuming, while he is the economic pillar of the family, having to work extra every day to have enough food.

Talking about the support from the Youth Union, Mr. Nguyen said that his house was about 100 meters from the main road, the road was so small that trucks could not enter. That day, the young people equipped themselves with many wheelbarrows, taking turns to transport each trip. The sun was blazing, their shirts were soaked with sweat, but everyone was enthusiastic. "But the most impressive thing was probably Loi. Not only did he join the volunteer team, but he also came back to support some other tasks in many more sessions," he said.

Ms. Vo Thi Thuy Bang, Secretary of Vi Thanh City Youth Union, said that in the movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Mr. Loi actively contributed in terms of working days and mobilized social resources to take care of households. When summarizing the movement, Vi Thanh City Youth Union will commend him to encourage and motivate his spirit of dedication and volunteerism.
