While ChatGPT is on the rise with over 300 million weekly users, experts warn of the potential negative impact of generative AI on the environment, according to WCCF Tech . Professor Kate Crawford, a leading AI expert, highlighted that each query from a ChatGPT user could waste up to half a liter of water.

ChatGPT consumes resources incredibly
Speaking at the State Library of Victoria in the US, Professor Crawford said the huge amount of water needed to cool the data centers that run AI models like ChatGPT is an alarming problem. "Very few people realize this is a big problem," she said.
Crawford urges tech companies like OpenAI to prioritize sustainability rather than focusing solely on the AI race. Without a concrete action plan, she warns, generative AI could consume as much energy as the entire country of Japan in just one year.
“We can’t run away from climate change,” Crawford said. “Even for tech billionaires, this should be an issue we all care about.”
Two years after its launch, ChatGPT has now achieved considerable success. However, Professor Crawford believes it is time to reassess the technology's true usefulness and ensure it is used responsibly, contributing to a more prosperous and sustainable society.
