Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, made the above statement after a series of " political earthquakes." He argued that energy shocks caused by the US-Israel conflict against Iran have further destabilized regional supply.
Since the end of February, when the US-Israel military campaign began, global crude oil prices have risen by approximately 50%, driving retail fuel and wholesale gas prices to record highs. This situation has further exacerbated the energy crisis in Europe, which has already seen a sharp decline in imports from Russia since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022.
On social media platform X, Dmitriev responded to a Swedish journalist who called the rise of the far-right AfD party in Germany a "political earthquake." He emphasized: "More will happen as the energy tsunami is about to hit the EU/UK."
In recent years, traditional parties in Europe have consistently lost ground to far-right or center-right coalitions, reflecting the political instability that has accompanied the energy crisis.
The Iran crisis has forced Britain to grant temporary import permits for Russian-sourced diesel and jet fuel in an effort to stabilize the market. This decision was made on May 20th, after the US also extended sanctions waivers for certain Russian oil shipments by sea.
The route through the Strait of Hormuz – which carries about 20% of the world's oil and LNG – is being disrupted, adding to market tension.
Some EU officials have called for restoring energy ties with Russia to address the crisis. However, the European Commission (EC) has affirmed that it will not resume importing Russian energy and will continue its roadmap to completely phase out fossil fuels from Russia by 2027.
Earlier, Dmitriev predicted that the EU would "inevitably have to beg" for Russian gas as energy prices continued to rise. He also emphasized that Europe is currently the "last" customer on Russia's priority list, as the country expands energy cooperation with other nations.
