Prices are skyrocketing, but Vietnamese businesses are still spending 10,700 billion VND to buy a type of nut in just two months. This item is pouring into our country from an African country.
According to statistics from the Customs Department, in the first two months of this year, our country exported nearly 66,400 tons of cashew nuts, earning 455.3 million USD, down 27.4% in volume and 7.4% in value compared to the same period last year.
On the other hand, Vietnamese enterprises spent nearly 420 million USD (about 10,700 billion VND) to buy 240,000 tons of raw cashew nuts while prices were skyrocketing. Compared to the same period last year, the amount of imported cashew nuts increased by only 7.3% but the value increased by 53.3%. This is also the agricultural product with the highest import turnover in the past two months.
Notably, the supply of cashew nuts to Vietnam has changed significantly. Accordingly, Cambodia is no longer the largest supplier of cashew nuts when the amount of imported goods from this neighboring country is only nearly 64 million USD, down 39% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, cashew nut imports from Tanzania jumped to 187 million USD, a sharp increase of 175%, nearly 3 times the 68 million USD figure of the same period in 2024.
In addition, cashew imports from Indonesia also doubled, making this Southeast Asian country the fourth largest supplier to the Vietnamese market.
In fact, to maintain its position as the world's number 1 producer and exporter of cashew nuts, for many years Vietnamese businesses have had to rely on imported raw materials from countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
In recent years, Cambodia has emerged as the second largest cashew capital in the world, and is also the largest source of cashew nuts for Vietnam. Last year, Vietnamese businesses spent 1.07 billion USD to “purchase” nearly 820,000 tons of raw cashew nuts from this market.
