4 main characters in the movie.
Their parents died in an accident, so the two sisters Thuong (Le Khanh) and Luc (Thuan Nguyen) took care of each other to live. Thuong was both an older sister and a mother, taking care of and raising Luc wholeheartedly. She was talented and successful, so she also wanted her younger brother to quickly become successful. Unfortunately, her older sister's love made Luc tired because everything was always arranged for him. He both relied on his older sister and opposed her, so at the age of 27, he still couldn't do anything. Until he met Hai Au (Uyen An), a free-spirited, individualistic girl. Luc quickly fell in love with her and determined to leave home to follow Hai Au to become independent. Thuong strongly opposed her younger brother's love, making their relationship even more distant. Truong (Quoc Truong), Thuong's lover, was upset because he always came second to Luc in every situation. Truong wanted to help Luc become independent and wanted Thuong to control his younger brother less. However, his actions unintentionally caused things to go in a negative direction when an incident occurred, causing everyone to be hurt and their feelings to be broken. After all, can love and sisterhood be mended?
"When Sister Falls, I Lift You Up" has a good script, everything is just right, director Vu Thanh Vinh knows how to balance the emotional and dramatic elements to lead the audience to fully enjoy the film, sympathizing with the emotions and psychology of the characters. The audience understands the love of the older sister for her younger brother, but is also suffocated by the way she controls and imposes everything in the style of a "patriarchal parent", wanting others to do everything according to her will. Then they feel sorry when, for her younger brother, she gives up her career and job to wholeheartedly take care of him, hoping that he will recover his spirit after a serious accident. Every tear she sheds, every confession she says makes the audience feel sad and sympathetic. Le Khanh in the role of Thuong truly conquers the audience with this psychological role.
On the opposite side, Thuan Nguyen in the role of Luc has portrayed quite well a younger brother who loves his sister but is useless, always wants to rebel, wants to live his own way. It was thought that according to the usual motif, this character would have to taste the bitterness of life to awaken, but fortunately, the screenwriter gave him "open eyes" in a gentle, reasonable way. He found a job that suits him, understands the hardships of his sister when having to worry about many things, falls in love with a girl on the same frequency and is trying every day to prove that he is not useless. When the incident happened, facing the harsh truth, he was not only hurt emotionally but also seriously injured physically. The young man collapsed in disappointment, leading to rash actions...
The two characters Truong and Hai Au also won the audience's sympathy because of their clearly portrayed personalities. If Truong is gentle and mature, Hai Au is playful and energetic. Both of them truly love the two sisters Thuong and Luc. They contribute to pushing the story to a climax because of their own calculations, but they are not villains, because what they do, although unintentionally leading to tragedy, does not come from malice, does not aim to harm anyone. Perhaps that is why after the events, the characters can forgive each other.
Through everything, the film conveys a meaningful message: love, if used incorrectly, will create pressure and burden for loved ones. On the contrary, when love is placed in the right place, it will help heal wounds. The story of Thuong and Luc is a clear example of that. After many ups and downs, the sisterhood becomes stronger because they understand, love and sacrifice to help each other live better.
