"Sister Falls, Brother Helps" has a good script, everything is well-balanced, and director Vu Thanh Vinh knows how to harmonize emotional and dramatic elements to guide viewers to fully enjoy the film, empathizing with the emotions and psychology of the characters. Viewers understand the sister's love for her younger brother, but also feel suffocated by her controlling and domineering behavior, wanting others to always follow her will. Then, they feel sorrowful when, for her brother's sake, she gives up her career and work to wholeheartedly care for him, hoping he will recover from a serious accident. Every tear she sheds, every word she speaks, evokes deep sympathy and compassion in the viewers. Le Khanh, in the role of Thuong, truly captivates the audience with this psychologically demanding performance.
On the opposite side, Thuan Nguyen, in the role of Luc, quite well portrayed a younger brother who loves his sister but is useless, always wanting to rebel and live life his own way. One might expect that, following a typical pattern, this character would have to experience the bitterness of life to come to his senses, but luckily, the scriptwriters gave him a gentle and logical "open eye." He finds a job that suits him, understands the hardships his sister faces having to manage so many things, falls in love with a girl who shares his wavelength, and strives every day to prove himself not useless. When a crisis occurs, facing the harsh truth, he is not only emotionally wounded but also severely physically injured. The young man collapses in despair, leading to impulsive actions…
The characters Truong and Hai Au also won the hearts of the audience with their clearly portrayed personalities. While Truong is gentle and mature, Hai Au is playful and full of energy. Both genuinely love the two sisters, Thuong and Luc. They contribute to the story's climax through their own calculations, but they are not villains, because their actions, though unintentionally leading to tragedy, did not stem from malice or aim to harm anyone. Perhaps that is why, after the events, the characters are able to forgive each other.
Throughout the film, a meaningful message is conveyed: love, if misused, can create pressure and burdens for loved ones. Conversely, when love is placed in the right place, it helps heal wounds. The story of Thuong and Luc as sisters is a clear example of this. After many ups and downs and hardships, their sisterly bond grows stronger because they understand, love, and sacrifice to help each other live better lives.
