Speaking at the first session of the World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council this year, Chinese Ambassador to the WTO Li Chenggang stressed: "The world is facing a series of tariff shocks."
Condemning Washington's unilateral imposition or threat of tariffs on trading partners - including Beijing - in violation of WTO rules, he said: "China firmly opposes such measures. The above-mentioned tariff shocks increase economic instability, disrupt global trade and risk causing domestic inflation, distorting markets, or even leading to a global recession."
Besides, according to the Chinese Ambassador, US unilateralism also threatens to disrupt the rules-based multilateral trading system.
* In the context of the country of one billion people being caught up in a tariff war with the US, on February 18, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao called on Japanese business leaders to cooperate with the world's second largest economy.
At a meeting with a Japanese business delegation led by Masakazu Tokura, chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), and other officials, Wang Wentao called for a "rules-based resolution" of the trade dispute between Beijing and Washington.
