Admission through scholarship policy: Words must go hand in hand with actions

However, experts say that scholarship policies need to be transparent and substantive.

As one of the students receiving the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture 's talented scholarship, Do Hai Van - class K67CNTPA Food Technology shared: "The scholarship helps me to be exempted from full tuition for 4 years of study. This is a priceless gift, adding motivation for me to strive in studying, scientific research, and fulfilling my dream of university with my favorite career. Hai Van hopes that the university will have more scholarship policies for students, creating conditions for disadvantaged students to access quality university education, meeting the goal of equity in education and training.

In the 2025 enrollment season, Vietnam Agricultural Academy has many scholarship programs for new students of K70. Accordingly, the academy offers 20 full "Talented Student" scholarships with 100% tuition exemption, and "I love my homeland" scholarships for students admitted to the academy in the 2025-2026 school year.

In particular, in the 2025-2026 school year, the academy will offer 3 scholarships to study abroad at the Southwest University of Science and Technology in China. Students who receive this scholarship will be exempted from tuition fees; participate in a preparatory Chinese language course in China; improve their Chinese and English proficiency; and intern and work in the laboratories of the study abroad school.

From the 2025-2026 academic year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will launch a scholarship program for students studying basic sciences - a key field that contributes to promoting the development of science and technology at a national strategic level in the new period.

Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh - Principal of the school said that the scholarship is evaluated based on the high school academic results of the candidates and the GPA of the students currently studying with the highest scholarship value up to 100% of the tuition fee for the entire course. The scholarship is considered for each academic year to create long-term motivation, encouraging students to make continuous efforts in the process of studying and researching at the school.

The President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology believes that the combination of the school's scholarship policy and the State's support policies will attract talented students with a passion for science and technology, making an important contribution to the training of high-quality science and technology human resources, meeting the development and integration requirements of Vietnam in the new period.

In addition, in the 2025-2026 school year, USTH continues to implement many scholarship policies for new students, including talent scholarships for candidates who have won national and international awards; study encouragement scholarships for candidates with excellent high school results and students in difficult circumstances.

According to the announcement of Phenikaa University (Hanoi), the scholarship fund for new students is over 50 billion VND. The scholarship policy is applied to candidates who enroll by all admission methods and submit complete documents to the school according to regulations.

The scholarship is also for students who complete the course according to the school's regulations and applies to excellent students, students with startup ideas, and the time required to win the award is no more than 3 years from the time of admission. For students who win awards in arts and sports, the time required to win the award is no more than 4 years from the time of admission, the school's scholarship policy is also applied.

Welcoming the universities for promptly having scholarship policies for students, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges acknowledged that, along with the tuition exemption policy for preschool children and high school students at public educational institutions nationwide, the above scholarship incentives meet the aspirations of the masses. It is a humane policy, demonstrating the superiority of the regime and satisfying the people's wishes.

From practice, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen realized that thanks to preferential policies and scholarships, many students have realized their dream of studying at university, especially those from ethnic minorities, mountainous areas, and children of poor and disadvantaged households. However, schools need to keep their promises and fulfill their commitments. They should not take advantage of preferential policies and scholarships to promote excessively, "saying one thing and doing another".

The fact that schools “launch” scholarship policies and tuition incentives shows that the policy of university autonomy has been and is being effective in practice, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi - former Deputy Minister of Education and Training acknowledged. With the autonomy mechanism, training institutions have the right to decide on preferential policies on scholarships and tuition fees. “I hope that schools keep their promises and fulfill their commitments to learners and society,” Associate Professor Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi expressed.

However, the former Deputy Minister of Education and Training recommends that candidates should carefully study the training institution's enrollment plan, including policies, incentives, and accompanying conditions of the school. This is necessary to avoid future problems, leading to unnecessary complaints.

“You should consider the preferential policies of the training institution as a “plus point” for your choice of major and school. You should choose according to your interests, passions, abilities and family circumstances,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Xuan Nhi recommended.

According to Dr. Le Viet Khuyen, choosing a major is an important task, related to future career. Therefore, in addition to factors such as: Interests, abilities, students need to research the job demand after graduation to have a reasonable choice. For candidates, preferential policies and scholarships should be considered as one of the criteria for choosing to register for admission to the school.
