On December 21, the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station (Binh Dinh) said that it had coordinated with the Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority to receive 14 crew members whose ship sank in the waters of Binh Dinh province.

On the night of December 20, the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station received information from the Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority about the Hoa Lu 02 ship (belonging to Ninh Binh Transport and Trading Company Limited) having an accident while traveling through the waters of Binh Dinh province.

At the time of the accident, there were 14 crew members on board, transporting about 12,274 tons of clinker, on the journey from Quang Ninh to Vung Tau. When moving to the sea near Hon Nuoc area (in Phu My district, Binh Dinh), it unfortunately sank.

Immediately afterwards, Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority issued a notice to vehicles moving near the area to proactively respond.

Receiving a distress signal, the ship Nhat Chau 289, which was sailing from Ninh Binh to Nha Trang and captained by La Van Thanh, turned the ship toward shore in time to rescue 14 crew members 30 minutes after the ship sank.

Thanks to timely rescue, the health of the 14 crew members on board Hoa Lu 02 is stable. Upon reaching shore, border medical staff and the Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority examined and cared for the health of the injured crew members.

Mr. Ma Van Ngoc - Captain of Hoa Lu 02 ship said that when he was steering the ship to the sea area of Phu My district, he encountered a big wave hitting the left side of the ship. At that time, seawater flooded into the ship's hold and cargo hold, causing the ship to gradually sink.

“At that time, I only had time to send out a distress signal and instruct the crew members on board to drop all their belongings, abandon ship, and grab life jackets to jump into the raft. Just over 10 minutes later, the ship sank completely into the sea. Fortunately, no one on board was injured,” said Mr. Ngoc.

According to Mr. Vu The Quang - Director of Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority, Hoa Lu 02 ship has sunk. It is determined that there were 17,000 liters of diesel oil on board, along with mainly clinker cargo.

“The amount of oil on the ship was not large. Before the ship sank, the ship’s technicians promptly shut off the oil valve. We will now coordinate with other units to develop a plan to control the oil spill and take measures to ensure maritime safety,” Mr. Quang informed.
