Correct understanding of Speaking skills in IELTS
What is IELTS Speaking?
IELTS is a comprehensive test to assess English proficiency. Speaking skills, although taking up only a small portion of the test time, play a decisive role in the final result. The Speaking test does not simply test the ability to memorize, but directly reflects the actual communication ability of the candidate. This is also the test that helps to clearly demonstrate the thinking, flexibility and language reflexes of the learner.
What is the most obvious difference in each Part 1, 2, 3 Speaking?
In the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner has different goals for each part. In IELTS Speaking Part 1 , they want to test the candidate's natural reflexes through familiar topics such as family, study, and hobbies.
In Part 2, the judges evaluate how the contestant develops ideas and arranges a coherent story in a limited time based on the cue card.
With Part 3, they focus on the ability to analyze, explain and argue at a deeper level, to see if candidates have enough language and thinking skills to discuss abstract or social issues.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Learning Strategy
This is the opening part of the speaking test, lasting about 4–5 minutes. During this short time, the examiner will ask questions about familiar topics such as family, work, hobbies or hometown, etc.
Structure and Scoring Criteria This section is scored on four important criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation (bestmytest.com).
Common mistakes Candidates often make mistakes such as giving too short answers, missing ideas, using simple vocabulary, repeating or not ensuring grammatical accuracy. In addition, unclear pronunciation is also the reason why Speaking Part 1 scores are affected.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Learning Strategy
In this part, candidates will receive a cue card and have 1 minute to prepare before presenting a 2-minute speech according to the required format. This part tests the candidate's ability to develop ideas as well as coherent storytelling skills.
Structure & scoring criteria An IELTS Speaking Part 2 speech needs to have a clear structure, including an introduction, development and conclusion. Regarding scoring, the examiner applies the same four criteria as Part 1 but requires higher levels of coherence, depth of content and language reflexes.
Common difficulties Many candidates do not manage their 2-minute time well, leading to incomplete or repetitive speeches. Lack of ideas to develop the story is also a big challenge. In addition, too many pauses or inappropriate wording make the speech lose its naturalness and logic.
How to practice effectively
Band 8.0 sample papers from various topics are available on the DOL Academy website.
One of the effective methods suggested by DOL is 4-step: understand the topic, brainstorm quickly, outline and practice speaking completely. Learners should also regularly record their speech to self-evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, referring to quality samples from DOL Academy will help expand ideas and learn how to develop more convincing content.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 & Part 2 play a key role in achieving a high Speaking score. With a detailed sample system, clear Linearthinking method, self-study support tools and live classes, DOL Academy is a reliable platform for students to confidently break through the Speaking band score.
