The robot dog named HOUND, created by the Dynamic Robot Design and Control Laboratory at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, ran 100 meters in the fastest time ever achieved by a four-legged robot, Interesting Engineering reported on December 13. With a record-breaking time of 19.87 seconds at a speed of 18.13 km/h, HOUND demonstrated unprecedented agility in a robot, Guinness World Records said.
“All the movements come from a motor controller trained in simulation through reinforcement learning. In simulation, it can even accelerate to higher speeds, but we haven’t tested it in the real world,” Young-Ha Shin, designer of HOUND, explains of the sophisticated technology behind the robot.
Weighing 45 kg, about the same as an adult male bulldog, HOUND has extremely light feet specially designed for sprinting. The actuator modules at the hips and knees are installed in a parallel configuration. A belt pulley system drives the knee joint, allowing the robot to perform a wide range of movements. Shin emphasizes the importance of the motor. According to him, instantaneous and consistent performance are important when deciding on a motor for a legged animatronic.
Despite its record-breaking speed, HOUND’s capabilities extend far beyond sprinting. The robot successfully climbed a 22-degree slope, walked 2 miles, and cleared a 14-inch-high obstacle course. Engineers will continue to refine HOUND’s design to achieve higher speeds and perform more complex maneuvers.
