Proactively care for and protect autumn-winter rice

Up to this point, many farmers in Can Tho City have planted early the 2025 autumn-winter crop to ensure harvesting rice before the flood waters return. Many early-sown autumn-winter rice crops in communes have entered the ear-forming stage, and the rice is growing and developing well. However, farmers are not complacent but always actively monitor their fields, weather conditions, and pests and diseases to proactively care for and protect the rice.

Rice grows well

Autumn-winter is the third rice crop of the year. Recently, although rice prices are not as high as expected, in order to increase income and avoid the situation of leaving the land bare and overgrown with grass, many farmers have decided to produce autumn-winter rice.

Mr. Le Phuoc Thien in Dong Thuan commune, Can Tho city, said: “This year, the flood is forecast to be low and my field area has a fairly solid dike system, but I still took the opportunity to plant the autumn-winter rice quite early to avoid the risk of being affected by rain, wind, storms and floods during the rice ripening period. This crop, my 4 hectares of rice were sown with OM. 5451 variety, the rice is now more than 50 days old and is entering the stage of heading, preparing to bloom. In general, the rice is growing quite well, with few pests and diseases, but I still visit the fields regularly to promptly detect pests and diseases for immediate treatment.”

Mr. Dao Hanh's 5 hectares of rice in Thoi Thuan B hamlet, Thoi Lai commune, also sowed OM 5451 seeds. The rice is now 40 days old and growing quite well. Mr. Hanh said: "Thanks to the good growth of the rice, no pests or diseases have appeared, so there is no need to spray pesticides. However, the current prices of many types of fertilizers and many types of input materials have increased quite high, so this crop's production costs are expected to increase compared to the 2025 summer-autumn crop. In the last summer-autumn crop, my rice field yielded 700 kg of fresh rice per hectare, sold at 6,000 VND/kg, which means I only made a profit of more than 1 million VND/hectare. I hope that this autumn-winter rice crop will have a higher yield and a better selling price to ensure farmers make a profit."

Improve rice production efficiency

By mid-July 2025, farmers in communes and wards in Can Tho City had planted the 2025 autumn-winter rice crop on an area of more than 72,850 hectares, reaching 81.6% of the plan. The main rice varieties grown by farmers this season are OM 5451, OM 18, Dai Thom 8, ST 24. In general, the autumn-winter rice crops have grown and developed quite well, in which some early-sown rice crops have entered the earing and flowering stages. Farmers have been actively monitoring their fields, regularly updating information on weather, pests and diseases and recommendations from functional agencies to proactively care for and protect the rice.

This year, floods are expected to come later and at lower levels than the average of many years, which will facilitate autumn-winter rice production. However, the weather situation continues to have many complex developments that threaten production. Storms combined with high tides can cause flooding in rice-growing areas with poor dyke systems if timely reinforcement is not paid attention to, as well as proactively preparing machinery to pump out water.

According to many farmers, due to climate change, extreme weather factors are appearing more and more frequently, causing negative impacts on production such as storms, high intensity rains and winds, and severe heat. In addition, the changing production and weather conditions also create favorable conditions for many types of pests to develop complicatedly and easily break out and attack rice, especially floods that can create conditions for rats to have many places to live, breed, and destroy rice. In particular, this crop, farmers continue to face difficulties in ensuring and improving the efficiency of rice production in the context of high prices of fertilizers, labor and many input costs for production, while rice prices are low compared to previous years.

Faced with this reality, farmers have paid attention to implementing recommendations from the relevant authorities in promoting the application of mechanization and scientific and technical advances, especially the technical packages of “3 reductions, 3 increases”, “1 must, 5 reductions”, applying high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation processes to reduce costs and improve production efficiency. Farmers have also strengthened their links with each other and with units and enterprises to develop the “large field” model and linkage models in rice production and consumption to stabilize product output.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Thanh in Dong Thanh hamlet, Dong Thuan commune, Can Tho city, said: “To improve the efficiency of rice production, I not only pay attention to choosing good varieties and synchronously applying technical advances to reduce the use of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, but also pay attention to the early season when fertilizer prices are still low to buy and store in advance to serve the entire rice crop. This autumn-winter crop, 70 hectares of my fields are sown with OM 5451 seeds, the rice is now 50 days old and there are traders who have offered to deposit to buy fresh rice at a price of 6,000 VND/kg. However, I think that at this price, farmers will hardly make much profit, especially in the context of recent high prices of fertilizers and many other input materials for production. Therefore, along with the efforts of farmers in reducing rice production costs, people hope that the relevant agencies will also pay attention to finding solutions to help farmers sell rice at a better price and buy fertilizer. fertilizers and agricultural supplies at reasonable prices".

Farmers also hope that the relevant authorities will pay attention to timely updating information on the market, weather, and diseases to help farmers be proactive in rice production and consumption. At the same time, continue to support farmers in promoting the application of machinery and scientific and technological advances to reduce costs, improve productivity, quality, and increase rice prices. Farmers expect that rice prices will improve in the future, rice will achieve high yields, helping to ensure profits for farmers.
