Proactively prevent diseases for children during the changing seasons

Việt NamViệt Nam29/10/2024

Currently, the weather is changing seasons, this is also the time when infectious diseases arise and develop. Especially diseases transmitted through the digestive tract, respiratory tract... Therefore, parents need to pay more attention to nutrition, care... to ensure the health of young children.

Common diseases in children

According to doctors from the Pediatrics Department of Tuyen Quang General Hospital, the weather is currently changing seasons, with erratic temperature changes, which increases the risk of illness in children, especially those with weak immune systems. One of the main reasons why young children are susceptible to respiratory infections, especially when the weather changes, is because their immune systems are still weak and cannot protect their bodies from pathogens. The disease often appears at the time of changing seasons, especially in autumn - winter or spring - summer.

Pediatricians at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital examine inpatients with respiratory diseases.

When children have respiratory infections, they are prone to cough, itchy nose, runny nose, sneezing, fever, and sore throat. In addition, children also have symptoms outside the respiratory tract such as diarrhea, vomiting, etc. These symptoms usually last 1-2 weeks and then go away, but if not cared for, monitored, and treated properly and promptly, the disease can easily progress to serious complications that are dangerous to the health and life of children.

Therefore, parents need to proactively prevent diseases for their children through proper nutrition, keeping the body warm, personal hygiene, and cleaning the living environment. Note that when children have respiratory infections, family members should take care of and closely monitor the child's condition. If you see your child coughing a lot, feeling tired, having a fever above 38 degrees Celsius, and especially having difficulty breathing, quickly take your child to the nearest medical facility for examination and timely treatment.

Ms. Lam Thi Luu in Vinh Loi commune (Son Duong) has a 2-month-old child. A few days ago, the child had a high fever and was wheezing. She gave the child fever-reducing medicine but it did not help, so she took the child to the Provincial General Hospital for examination. After examination, the doctors said that the child had pneumonia and had to be hospitalized.

As for Ms. Ma Thi Ha in Binh Nhan commune (Chiem Hoa), her 2-year-old child had a sore throat with symptoms of high fever and cough. She was hospitalized in the Pediatrics Department and was regularly examined by doctors and treated for symptoms. At the same time, parents were given additional instructions on how to properly care for their children's personal hygiene and how to keep them warm during the changing seasons.

Proactive disease prevention for children

Doctor CK1 Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, Deputy Head of the Pediatrics Department, Tuyen Quang General Hospital, said: From the beginning of the year to October 28, the Pediatrics Department received over 7,180 inpatients. In the third quarter, the number of patients increased significantly compared to the second quarter of 2024, especially the number of patients with long-term treatment increased, leading to an increase in the hospital bed capacity. According to the plan, the Pediatrics Department has 110 beds, but the actual bed capacity is currently 145 beds.

A child with acute diarrhea is being examined by a pediatrician.

During the changing seasons, children are susceptible to respiratory and digestive diseases. On average, the Pediatrics Department has 20-35 children hospitalized for inpatient treatment each day, most of whom often have symptoms such as: High fever, cough, sore throat. Through examination, children with respiratory diseases are mainly pneumonia caused by RSV virus, commonly found in children under 1 year old. RSV is respiratory syncytial virus, a virus that causes lung and respiratory tract infections, causing bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children. RSV virus in children can cause mild symptoms, similar to the common cold such as: cough, sneezing, runny nose...

In addition, children show signs of fussiness, discomfort, poor sleep, lethargy, poor feeding or refusal to feed, vomiting... Some children have severe symptoms such as breathing faster than normal, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing. Most cases of RSV infection in children are not life-threatening, however, if the child shows signs of severe illness causing high fever, difficulty breathing, they will need a ventilator and long-term treatment.

To help children prevent diseases during the changing seasons, parents need to pay attention to their diet, keeping them warm, while playing and sleeping. Limit children from eating and drinking cold foods, especially cold drinks. When the weather turns cold, keep children warm even when indoors. When bathing children, use warm water and bathe in a room with no wind. After bathing, dry the body and dress quickly. Every day, children should be trained to maintain oral hygiene, gargle with saline, and wash their hands with soap.

In addition, parents need to have scientific knowledge to recognize respiratory diseases in children, so that they can take care of their children properly. When children show signs of illness such as fever, cough, diarrhea, etc., parents should not buy medicine to treat themselves. Take your child to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment.
