National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and President Biden witnessed the ceremony of handing over war diaries to Vietnamese veterans at the National Assembly House.
During a reception in Hanoi today, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue emphasized that Mr. Joe Biden is the first US president to visit the Vietnamese National Assembly, welcoming the two countries to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace , cooperation and sustainable development, according to a statement from the National Assembly Office.
National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and President Biden witnessed the leaders of the Vietnam Veterans Association, the Ministry of National Defense, and the United States presenting war relics. Among the relics returned by the United States was the war diary of a veteran in Thai Binh. This was a notebook that an American soldier had collected after a raid on the veteran’s unit in 1967, and then handed over to the U.S. government.

President Joe Biden said that during his 36 years in Congress, he has always supported strengthening US-Vietnam relations and has always contributed to normalizing relations between the two countries since the first day of establishing relations. National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue expressed his appreciation for President Biden's good feelings and contributions to Vietnam-US relations.
The two leaders also shared many common values between the two countries and two peoples, including the sacred rights recorded in the 1776 American Declaration of Independence and which President Ho Chi Minh cited in the opening of the September 2, 1945 Declaration of Independence that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue suggested that the US soon complete procedures to recognize Vietnam as a market economy and continue to devote resources to cooperation in overcoming war consequences, an indispensable field for the process of healing, building and strengthening trust, understanding and mutual respect between the two countries and peoples.
President Biden and congressmen agree with the proposal of the National Assembly Chairman and will strive to promote internal consensus in the US to support Vietnam-US relations and soon recognize Vietnam's market economy status.
President Biden pays a state visit to Vietnam on September 10-11. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with President Biden on the afternoon of September 10 after the official welcoming ceremony, announcing the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
The two leaders considered cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war a priority in bilateral relations, helping to build trust and enhance mutual understanding. The two countries are determined to complete the decontamination of Bien Hoa airport, step up the clearance of bombs, mines and explosives, increase support for people with disabilities, and improve DNA testing capacity. Vietnam also continues to cooperate comprehensively with the US in searching for the remains of US soldiers missing in action during the war.
