On the morning of February 1, at Yen So fish market, the largest fish market in Hanoi, many traders came to get goods to sell on the occasion of Ong Cong and Ong Tao Tet.
Early in the morning of December 22, many trucks transported red carp into the market.
Mr. Le Van Can ( Hai Duong ) has been raising fish for decades and shared: “This year I sold 7 tons of fish at 50,000 VND/kg. Although the productivity is higher than every year, the fish are big and beautiful, but the price is half of last year. I lost money on transportation. This is also one of the few times I have to go to the market to sell. In previous years, as soon as the fish were pulled out of the pond, there were buyers.”
Fish are stored in oxygenated containers for long distance transport.
Compared to last year, the fish were sold for 120,000-250,000 VND/kg, this year it is less than half that number (only 50,000-80,000 VND/kg). Each store imports hundreds of kilograms of red carp a day, but in general the number of customers coming to buy is not too bustling.
Ms. Pham Thi Hang ( Hung Yen ) spent many hours going to fish stalls to choose and buy. “I left home at 5am and arrived at the market at 6am to choose beautiful fish. This time I only bought 10kg, but because I brought them home to sell for 20,000 VND for 3 fish, I had to carefully choose each fish. The fish had to be beautiful, with long fins, not injured, and without peeling scales, I would only buy them,” Ms. Hang said.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue (Hoang Mai district) only had to spend 40,000 VND to buy dozens of fish. "At first, I only planned to buy 3 fish to worship Ong Cong and Ong Tao. This year, fish are too cheap, so I bought more to put in the tank," Ms. Hue confided.
The imported fish are sold on the same day. The remaining fish after each market visit will be sold at a cheaper price. Many traders choose to release them instead of selling them at a discount or leaving them for the next day.
