"Once upon a time" program: A meaningful fairy tale journey

Since 2000, the program "Once upon a time" produced by IDECAF Stage (now IDECAF Drama Theater) has been closely associated with many generations of young audiences.

The program "Once Upon a Time" has gone through a journey of 25 years, presenting 36 plays, serving millions of young audiences. Not only is it a special spiritual food every summer, "Once Upon a Time" also contributes to forming a sustainable cultural ecosystem for children.

The treasure trove of Vietnamese fairy tales has been thoroughly exploited by artists in "Once upon a time", such as "The Jungle Book", "Tam Cam", "Aladdin and the Genies"... The plays are told in a very unique way, through a humorous perspective and always carry the breath of the times, reflecting many issues abouteducation , love, courage, honesty, self-protection skills, the spirit of overcoming difficulties...

The "Once Upon a Time" brand has spread abroad - where many Vietnamese people live. Many overseas Vietnamese who visit their homeland have sought out and watched the "Once Upon a Time" plays that they love.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Yen Chi, former Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema, commented: "The program "Once upon a time" is one of the pioneering models of professional children's drama in Ho Chi Minh City. According to director Dinh Toan, the scripts of "Once upon a time" are carefully invested, the language is rich in poetry and life; the music , choreography, and art are always eye-catching and attractive.

"The stage space is always filled with imaginative colors but is not monotonously "childish". On the contrary, the program always opens the way for children to ask questions and draw their own lessons after laughter and tears. "Once upon a time" always creates interaction, so that children can immerse themselves in the dramatic story" - director Dinh Toan commented.

The show "Once Upon a Time" is highly appreciated by insiders. Although today's theater scene faces many challenges from the development of technology and online entertainment, the show's creators still maintain the goal of "sowing the seeds of art into young hearts and pure souls, helping children grow up with rich imaginations and kind souls".

This summer 2025, "Descendants of the Sun God" - the 36th play in the "Once Upon a Time" program - will be performed at Ben Thanh Theater (HCMC). Still using the familiar "formula" of gods, fairies, magic... but "Descendants of the Sun God" opens up a wider range of imagination. The play sets the story in a magical context and a conflict of power between the gods, where good is not only the victory of light but also the choice to stand on the side of humans.

Author Quang Thao has built a dramatic plot, conveying profound lessons: honesty, solidarity, personal responsibility, choosing the right thing... Many famous artists: Thanh Thuy, Bach Long, Dinh Toan, Hong Anh, Hoang Trinh, My Duyen, Dai Nghia, Tuyen Map, Trinh Minh Dung, Quang Thao, Dong Hai... will participate in "Descendants of the Sun God".
