The program King of Vietnamese, broadcast on VTV3, is causing controversy when it made a basic spelling mistake. Specifically, in episode 28, the program asked the contestant to choose the correct answer between the two options "delay" or "late". After the contestant chose the answer "late", MC Xuan Bac confirmed that the contestant's answer was correct.
When the program was broadcast, many viewers discovered that this was a basic spelling mistake when in Vietnamese there is only the word "chầm late". Mr. Hoang Tuan Cong - a researcher of Vietnamese language shared quite indignantly about the program's basic mistake.
The show caused controversy when it gave the wrong answer as "delay".
"It can be said that VTV's staff was wrong right from the question. In Vietnamese, there is no word written as 'trầm lại' or 'chầm chè', but only the word 'trầm lại'. 'Chầm chè' is a compound word, in which 'trầm' means late, late (compared to the required or specified deadline), such as "arriving late so the train ran away", "going 30 minutes late"; 'Trè' also means slow, late. For example: "late by an hour", "train coming back late again",... Thus, the meaning of 'chầm' and 'trè' is very clear. However, VTV turned 'trè' into 'chè' in a very meaningless way", he explained.
He said that the people who created the outline, script, and advisors of the program did not understand the very words they used to challenge the players. He was upset when he said that the program was not only subjective but also very careless.
In the comment section, many viewers agreed with Mr. Hoang Tuan Cong's opinion. The viewers thought that this was an unacceptable mistake in a program about the Vietnamese language itself.
"Even the King of Vietnamese is like that, I don't understand what Vietnamese 'people' are like", "Once I heard Xuan Bac correcting someone looking for a reduplicative word, saying that 'ham hap' is meaningless", "Very dangerous because it spreads mistakes and people mistakenly think that whatever VTV says is right", "Too careless!"..., the audience was upset.
In response to the controversy, the program quickly responded. Accordingly, in the latest episode 29, the program posted a correction below the screen about the spelling mistake in episode 28. The Vietnamese King side confirmed that the editorial board made a spelling mistake and corrected the correct answer as "delayed".
However, sharing more with VTC News , Mr. Hoang Tuan Cong added: "The King of Vietnamese corrected in the next program with a line of text running at the bottom of the screen, but in my opinion, the most necessary correction, which is to cut out the wrong part in the program with that error, was not done."
The show has been hit with backlash after sparking controversy over a spelling mistake.
King of Vietnamese is a VTV game show that not only helps the players but also the audience to understand and love their mother tongue more. However, this is not the first time the program has encountered controversy.
Previously, with the question: "Is "cần đào" an adjective or a verb? ". The program's advisory board member shared that "cần đào" is a word that complements a verb and then gave examples: "cần đào" action, "cần đào" attitude... Finally, the advisory board affirmed that "cần đào" is an "adjective that complements a verb".
However, viewers feel confused by the examples given by the advisory board members. In the phrase "reckless action", "reckless attitude", "action" or "attitude" is understood as a noun, not a verb. "Reckless" here is clearly complementing the nouns "action", "attitude". If the advisor gave a specific example such as: "He acted recklessly", then "action" would be the verb.
According to knowledge, a word that complements a noun is called an adjective, and a word that complements a verb is called an adverb. Therefore, in this case, "cân đào" will become an adverb if it follows the verb " hành động". That is why this answer also caused controversy among the audience for a while.
