Indonesian expert gives advice on how to help home team defeat U23 Vietnam

(Dan Tri) - Indonesian football expert Aris Budi Sulistyo believes that if they control the ball better, U23 Indonesia will defeat U23 Vietnam in the final of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship at Bung Karno Stadium tonight.

"Looking at their progress since the group stage, the Indonesian U23 team is still a strong candidate. I think their chances are 55% compared to 45% for Vietnam U23," Bola newspaper quoted Indonesian football expert Aris Budi Sulistyo as saying ahead of the 2025 Southeast Asian Championship final between Indonesia U23 and Vietnam U23 at Bung Karno Stadium at 8pm tonight (July 29).

On the way to the final, U23 Vietnam won all the matches in the group stage and defeated U23 Philippines in the semi-final with a score of 2-1.

Meanwhile, after a resounding 8-0 victory over Brunei in the opening match, U23 Indonesia won a narrow 1-0 victory over Philippines U23 and then drew two matches against Malaysia U23 (last round of the group stage) and Thailand U23 (semi-final match).

Notably, in the final match of the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, U23 Indonesia lost to U23 Vietnam, so coach Gerald Vanenburg and his team do not want to repeat the "mistake" of two years ago when rematching with the "Golden Dragons" at home stadium Bung Karno.

"A highly rated team like U23 Thailand is still far behind U23 Indonesia in terms of ball control. That's why I expect U23 Indonesia to continue to show this advantage when facing U23 Vietnam," said expert Aris Budi Sulistyo.

"However, when facing high-class teams like Malaysia or Vietnam, U23 Indonesia had difficulty developing their playing style, especially in the opponent's defensive area. They always lacked ideas or creativity in penetrating the opponent's defense.

We saw Indonesia U23 draw with Malaysia U23, then Thailand U23 took the lead and equalized from a set piece. So the coordination between the forward lines is still very lacking.

This is really a big challenge for our national team," Aris Budi Sulistyo added about his concerns about the home team's weaknesses in the final match against U23 Vietnam.
