Muller completes bizarre transfer

Legend Thomas Muller is set to open a new chapter in his career by joining Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps.

Muller went to America to play.

Details of the deal between Muller and the Vancouver Whitecaps have not been released, but according to GiveMeSport journalist Tom Bogert, the Whitecaps have agreed in principle to buy back Muller's " discovery rights" from FC Cincinnati for $400,000 .

In MLS, “discovering rights” are a mechanism that allows a team to have the first say in negotiations with an international player. This mechanism is quite unfamiliar to fans who follow European football, where clubs have the freedom to negotiate, even “turn the tables” on a player regardless of whether their opponent has reached an agreement with a player.

Notably, Muller will not immediately become a Designated Player - the name given to stars who can receive salaries exceeding the ceiling like Lionel Messi, but will only be upgraded to this position from the next season.

Cincinnati previously attempted to sign Muller but failed due to a lack of designated player slots and could only offer an income of less than $2 million , which was not attractive enough for the 2014 World Cup champion. In Vancouver, he will earn around $3 million .

Muller joined Bayern Munich in 2000 at the age of 10, progressing from the youth team to the first team and becoming an icon for the Bavarian club. He made a total of 756 appearances, scoring 250 goals and providing 276 assists.

With Bayern, Müller won 12 Bundesliga titles, 2 Champions Leagues, 2 FIFA Club World Cups and many other titles. With the German national team, Müller scored 45 goals, won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup and won the 2014 World Cup with the Mannschaft.

Before his farewell match with Bayern, Muller made it clear that he would not retire but would continue playing professionally. Joining Vancouver Whitecaps - the team currently ranked second in the MLS Western Conference with a record of 13 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses - will be an opportunity for the 1989-born star to try his hand at a new football environment, while also bringing his top class and experience to MLS.
