The story of the profession of 'sound wizards'

In the digital age, when a simple tap on the screen can bring us to countless information, modern podcasts and radio have emerged as attractive channels to convey news and stories. Behind each attractive podcast episode is the hard work of audio producers and editors - the "sound wizards".

“Closed” production process

Starting to approach radio work since 2004, up to now, editor Diem Trang ( Long An Radio and Television Newspaper ) has 11 years of experience in the radio field. She is also a witness to the transition from traditional radio to multi-platform podcasts. From just editing songs, she started to create formats for many programs: Young Album, Your Artist, Hotzing, Fairy Garden, Childhood Colors, Weekend Entertainment, Music Magazine, Music Emotions, Self-love with FM 96.9,... With the advantage of a warm voice, editor Diem Trang can easily "package" the work completely from writing the script, reading to post-production.

“I find that being proactive in the “closed” process of modern radio production helps authors easily convey the messages as well as the thoughts and feelings of the work to listeners. And when creating the finished product, the intention is to express it in the best way, which sounds are most necessary, which music mix is best, all depend on the emotional factors and feelings of the work itself, combined with the skills of using technology” - editor Diem Trang shared.

At Long An Newspaper and Radio and Television Station, Long An province, editor Thuy Duong is assigned to be in charge of radio programs such as Fairy Tale Colors, Safe Living, More Precious Than Gold, etc. In the development trend of increasingly modern journalism and radio and the "explosion" of podcasts, editor Thuy Duong is not out of that flow.

In addition to editing or producing content, Ms. Thuy Duong also takes on the script and audio production. “No one understands your work better than you do,” she shared. Instead of waiting for another department to do post-production, Ms. Thuy Duong can both produce or edit content, mix music, and handle technical processing to create a complete radio work. This “closed” approach helps her control the quality of the work, take the initiative in using sound to “push” the audience’s emotions, and create more attraction to increase the effectiveness of the work’s propaganda.

“Storytelling” with sound

Editor Thuy Duong (Long An Newspaper and Radio and Television Station)

Understanding her work well, Ms. Thuy Duong is the one who decides where to insert music, which moments should be kept quiet and thoughtful, and she herself directly does it, with the expectation of being able to build a good and attractive story to the ears.

After completing a product, Thuy Duong plays the role of editor to “find mistakes” for herself. There are times when, because she is not satisfied, she is willing to start over so that the coordination between content and sound reaches the desired “maturity”. Editor Thuy Duong shares: “If you want your work to be attractive, first try to be your own audience. The trust of the listener is the most important measure. Every time I finish a product, I often listen to it again with the mindset of an audience so that I can correct and adjust the work accordingly.”

A modern radio work or podcast is not just about reading the news to the audience but also about helping the audience feel the space and context to "touch" the listeners' emotions by promoting the power of sound.

When collaborating with reporter Huynh Phong to create the work Trap called “capital support” warning about loan sharking and “black credit”, editor Thuy Duong lets the audience feel the extreme poverty of the victims through recordings of threatening calls, even the sound of vandalism by thugs (extracted from home surveillance cameras) when applying pressure and the victims’ angry, resentful voices. Combined with the use of music, the work becomes attractive, easily “touching” the audience’s emotions.

As journalists, podcasters and radio broadcasters in the 4.0 era must possess "two brains" to think journalistically, choose topics, verify facts, structure scripts, and listen to and understand the emotions of the audience and listeners, choosing "high places and low places" in the sound flow of the work.

In today’s information explosion, modern radio and podcasts are increasingly popular for their deep and emotional reach. Podcast producers and modern radio are talented storytellers, helping news not only be heard but also deeply felt./.
