Lyon miraculously escapes relegation and returns to Ligue 1.

In June 2025, Lyon FC was relegated to Ligue 2 due to financial violations. The decision was announced by the French Professional Football League (LFP) after receiving a report from the Financial Conduct Authority (DNCG).

According to DNCG, Lyon is burdened with €175 million in debt but has failed to provide a clear financial plan to address it. Although Lyon claims to have fully cooperated and received new funding from shareholders, DNCG still considers the financial situation unreliable.

However, in its latest announcement, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed: “At a meeting on July 9, 2025, at FFF headquarters, the Financial Control Body DNCG decided to: Revoke the decision to administratively relegate the first team to Ligue 2 after the 2024/2025 season, and to monitor the wage bill and transfer costs based on the projected Ligue 1 budget for the 2025/2026 season.”

The French club's website also confirmed: “Lyon FC welcomes the DNCG's decision to keep the club in Ligue 1. Lyon FC thanks the Appeals Committee for recognizing the ambition of the new management, who are determined to ensure a serious management model in the future.”

With this new decision, Lyon not only secured their place in the league but also retained their spot in the Europa League next season, thanks to their 6th place finish in Ligue 1 in the 2024/2025 season.
