I was bitten by a dog a few days ago and have had two rabies vaccinations. However, due to the nature of my job, I have to drink alcohol. Will this reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine? (Nguyen Khoa, 24 years old, Da Nang )
Reply:
Previously, the old generation of rabies vaccines contained nerve cells, so side effects on the nervous system were likely to occur. It was necessary to absolutely abstain from alcohol during the vaccination period.
Currently, new generation rabies vaccines such as Verorab (France) and Abhayrab vaccine (India) have modern production technology so they do not affect health and memory.
However, to ensure the effectiveness of the vaccine as well as the body's ability to respond to create antibodies against rabies, you should still limit alcohol consumption during the vaccination period.
In addition, you should not overwork during the vaccination process. You need to inject the correct and sufficient number of doses so that your body can produce enough antibodies and avoid stopping the regimen halfway. The post-exposure regimen includes 5 doses on days 0-3-7-14-28 (for intramuscular injection) or 4 doses on days 0-3-7-28 (for intradermal injection).

When people are bitten by dogs, they need to wash the wound with soap under clean running water for about 15 minutes, then wash the wound again with 70% alcohol or iodine. Limit further damage to the wound and do not cover it tightly. Then, go to a medical facility to have the doctor examine and prescribe rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum. People can get a preventive vaccine with a 3-shot regimen. If bitten by a dog or cat, the vaccination schedule will be simpler, only need to get 2 more shots without using anti-rabies serum even if the wound is severe.
Nearly 130 vaccination centers in the VNVC system have all the necessary vaccines for rabies and infectious diseases for children and adults. In addition, VNVC also supports a free vaccination reminder hotline, helping customers to get vaccinated correctly and fully according to the regimen, bringing the highest protection efficiency.
