Waking up at 6 am, Ninh Thi Thu Huong (born in 2001, from Ninh Binh province ) quickly changed her clothes and rushed to the textile factory near her home to be on time for work. Since having her new appearance, Huong has become more confident when going out and loves life much more than before.

Born into a disadvantaged family, Huong was a pretty, healthy girl from a young age, but at the age of 3, a small tumor appeared behind her earlobe. By the age of 6, the tumor in her jaw had grown larger, forcing her family to choose surgery to remove it. Biopsy results confirmed the tumor was benign.

The after-effects of the surgery left Huong's face disfigured, deeply sunken with a long scar. This facial deformity caused her to be constantly ridiculed and teased by her friends, who nicknamed her "crooked mouth" or "sunken face." Once, during recess, Huong was even beaten by a group of friends, resulting in scratches on her arms and legs. "They were jealous because they saw that I received special attention and favoritism from the teachers, so they ganged up and beat me mercilessly," Huong recalled.

After finishing high school, Huong decided to work as a garment factory worker to help ease the financial burden on her parents. Despite her physical disability, Huong has a beautiful relationship with her soldier boyfriend – who is always by her side, encouraging and supporting her. Her boyfriend has wanted to introduce her to his family many times, but due to her insecurities about her appearance, Huong hasn't dared to visit yet.

Thinking about the future, Huong began researching cosmetic surgery and hoped to have surgery to have a normal-looking face. It was at this time that she learned about a free cosmetic surgery program in Hanoi . After many nights of deliberation, the girl from Ninh Binh decided to apply and was fortunate enough to be selected by the organizers.

Dr. Richard Huy, a physician at Kangnam Plastic Surgery Hospital, stated: "This is a challenging case. Doctors will have to study how to transfer a skin flap from the head to the recessed area, combining it with a skin flap from the buttocks to fill the depression. To achieve a more balanced face, the doctors will continue with jaw correction and bone grafting surgery."

Facing a complex surgery, Huong suffered from severe anemia. Doctors had to devise a nutritional and treatment plan to ensure the 2001-born girl's health met safety criteria throughout the surgical process.

Huong underwent a total of four surgeries. The surgeries were quite challenging due to the deep recess in her jawbone, but ultimately, the journey to restore her appearance was successful, yielding good results.

After the surgery, she felt more confident and smiled more. Looking at herself in the mirror, Huong smiled and said it was a miracle, opening a new chapter in her life. "I feel like a princess, more confident, no longer shy," the 10X girl said.

When Huong returned home after six months away, her family was astonished and didn't recognize her. Only when she greeted them did everyone rush to hug her and burst into tears.

Through her personal transformation, the young woman wants to convey a message to everyone: be strong, fight for what you can, speak up, and bravely overcome life's pain.

"None of us have the right to choose where we are born, but we do have the right to choose how we live. Don't be pessimistic, don't give up on your dreams," Huong shared.

Jaw tumors are a fairly common disease worldwide and in Vietnam. Global literature shows that approximately 10-15% of the Caucasian population has palatal bone tumors. Studies on other Asian populations also show a relatively high incidence of jaw bone tumors, ranging from 40-60%.

The exact cause of jaw bone tumors remains unknown. Several risk factors increase the incidence of jaw bone tumors, including local trauma, a diet deficient in vitamins and calcium, and prolonged use of phenytoin-containing medications.

Upper or lower jaw bone tumors are often asymptomatic and are only discovered incidentally during examinations. Large bone tumors can interfere with the placement of teeth or dentures, cause speech disorders, surface ulcers, difficulty eating, and psychological disorders such as fear of cancer. These symptoms are usually not dangerous but affect the patient's aesthetics, health, and psychology.

To minimize risk factors, which also contribute to disease prevention, adults should maintain a balanced diet, supplement with appropriate amounts of vitamin D and unsaturated fats; supplement with other vitamins and calcium; and avoid prolonged use of phenytoin-containing medications.
