Be careful not to be caught off guard if you drink coffee and walk at the same time.

Both coffee and walking stimulate the bowels, says New York-based gastroenterologist Samantha Nazareth, MD. Combining the two makes you more likely to have a bowel movement.

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks.

A study published in the medical journal Diseases of the Colon & Rectum found that drinking caffeinated beverages led to the need to defecate sooner than drinking decaffeinated beverages. This is because caffeine causes the intestinal muscles to contract.

It’s not just caffeine that’s to blame, says Dr. Kate Scarlata, a leading gut health expert. Coffee stimulates the release of the hormone gastrin in the stomach and cholecystokinin from the small intestine. Gastrin increases colon motility, and cholecystokinin releases bile and digestive enzymes, which kick-start digestion. Coffee also stimulates stomach acid, which helps move food through the system.

Meanwhile, walking helps activate the core muscles and digestion. Dr. Niket Sonpal, a gastroenterologist working in the US, said: Just walking gently also contracts the abdominal muscles, helping to have regular bowel movements.

Walking contracts the abdominal muscles, helping to keep bowel movements regular.

To prevent this from happening, there are a few things you can do:

Avoid drinking coffee while walking or close to the time of walking . Dr. Nazareth recommends waiting until after your morning routine before going out for a walk.

Drink only 1 cup of coffee . This way you don't absorb too much caffeine or stimulate too much acid to promote digestion.

Stay away from milk and cream . Dr. Nazareth says the lactose in milk can stimulate bowel movements, especially in people who are lactose intolerant.

Try iced coffee : In some cases, iced coffee doesn't affect the gut as much as hot coffee. While there's no research to prove it for sure, you can give it a try to see how your body reacts, according to Well And Good .
