A large-scale cyber espionage campaign has targeted Microsoft's self-deployed SharePoint server software, exploiting a previously undisclosed zero-day vulnerability, compromising around 100 organizations.

The affected organizations are mainly in the US and Germany, including government agencies. More than 9,000 servers worldwide are at risk, according to data from the Shadowserver Foundation and security firm Eye Security. Google said there were signs of a China-linked hacking group, but Beijing declined to comment.
However, the attack did not affect SharePoint servers running on Microsoft's cloud platform. Microsoft has released a patch and recommends that organizations update immediately.
In recent days, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the UK Cyber Security Agency have been involved, but have not released any specific information. Experts warn that extensive security checks are needed, not just installing patches.
