Dr. Thira Woratanarat of Chulalongkorn University's faculty of medicine said on her Facebook page on May 12 that recent developments of COVID-19 are very worrying.
According to the Bangkok Post , the doctor said the number of new cases last week in Thailand was 16,607, an increase of more than 2,000 cases compared to the 14,680 cases recorded the previous week.
Among them, six people were reported dead last week, double the number recorded the week before.
"The Department of Disease Control (DDC) report shows that COVID-19 is spreading more and more, contrary to the statement previously released by the Ministry of Health ," Dr Thira said in the post.
Meanwhile, Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virologist at the department of pediatrics at Chulalongkorn University, said the latest variants of COVID-19 are reported to be more transmissible but have milder symptoms and can be treated similarly to other respiratory diseases.
"Despite the large number of cases reported recently, people with new COVID-19 appear to be being treated the same as those with other respiratory illnesses, and no specific quarantine period has been indicated," the doctor wrote on Facebook.
Dr Yong's post confirmed a report by Thailand's Ministry of Public Health on May 10 that although the number of cases remains high, the virus strain generally causes only mild symptoms.
Dr. Yong said research shows that sub-variants of the COVID-19 virus are evolving rapidly, leading to more diverse strains of the virus. These new strains can also spread quickly but have milder symptoms. According to the doctor, vaccines cannot prevent these new strains of COVID-19.
