Coolie Never Cries marks the fourth time Vietnamese cinema has competed at this prestigious film festival. This is also the next work by Pham Ngoc Lan to participate in the Berlin Film Festival, after 2019 with the work A Good Land competing in the short film category, and 2016 with the work Another City also competing in this category.

The Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival explores new voices in cinema. In the two sub-categories of Panorama, the film Coolie Never Cries competes in the fiction category.

The young director has been nurturing the film Coolie Never Cries since 2017 and has been developing it for a long time. The two producers Nghiem Quynh Trang and Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, who have produced art films such as Bi, Dung So! or Ashes of Glory , continue to "support" the project. Director Phan Dang Di is part of the crew as an artistic creator.

The film tells the story of a poor Vietnamese woman (played by People's Artist Minh Chau) who returns to Germany to collect the ashes of her deceased husband and a coolie. When she returns to Vietnam, she learns that her niece is pregnant and preparing to get married...

Pham Ngoc Lan was born in 1986. Before making his first feature film , Coolie Never Cries , he devoted himself to short films. Besides A Good Land, Another City, his short film Unseen River received the Asino d'Oro (Golden Donkey) award in 2020 at the Concorto International Short Film Festival, Italy.
