The match took place in Brazil. Ten Hag fielded his strongest squad and applied a 3-4-2-1 formation, similar to his predecessor Xabi Alonso. Veteran players such as Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface were both trusted to start.
However, after just two minutes, things turned bad when U20 Flamengo opened the scoring. Then 10 minutes later, the Brazilian team scored 2 more goals to increase the score to 3-0.
While Ten Hag struggled to make adjustments, Flamengo U20 added a fourth goal just before half-time. In the 36th minute, the former MU coach had to take off Flekken and Boniface to improve the game, but did not make any more substitutions after the break. This cost Leverkusen when Flamengo scored the fifth goal in the 55th minute.
It was not until the 60th minute that Ten Hag decided to make a complete substitution. Stars like Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo and Patrick Schick were brought on to try and salvage the German side's title. In the remainder of the match, youngster Montrell Culbreath scored the only goal for Leverkusen in the 71st minute.
This result marked Leverkusen's first defeat since parting ways with two key stars Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong along with coach Alonso. Despite bringing in new players such as Flekken, Jarrell Quansah and Malik Tillman, Ten Hag still has a lot of work to do to rebuild the team.
Leverkusen will continue their preparations for the new season with friendly matches against VFL Bochum, Fortuna Sittard, Pisa and Chelsea.
