American voters face the attraction of the presidential election

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/09/2024

As the US presidential election approaches, voter registration numbers are breaking records, reflecting growing public interest in the policies of the incoming administration .

USA Today on September 22 cited statistics from the voter registration support organization Vote.org showing that on National Voter Registration Day on September 17, more than 150,000 people registered on this site, an unprecedented high number.

Two weeks ago, 337,826 people clicked on a link on music star Taylor Swift’s Instagram account to be directed to their state’s voter registration page. Although the singer endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, visitors did not provide party affiliation, and neither Vote.org nor Swift tracked their party registration.

More young voters

A large proportion of newly registered voters are young people, many of whom are first-time voters, according to Vote.org. Those under 35 made up 81% of registered voters on September 17, with the number of 18-year-olds up significantly and 53% higher than the same time four years ago.

US Election: People cast first ballots for president

“We’ve actually seen an increase in 18-year-olds registering to vote. We know that if we can get people registered and involved in this election, we can bring the next generation of voters into democracy,” said Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is looking to make it easier for people to register to vote. After years of lobbying, the Democratic congresswoman announced on September 20 that people who apply for health insurance through HealthCare.Gov will be given the option to receive information about voter registration.

Others are getting creative with ways to help young voters register. Ezra Gershanok, owner of the New York City apartment rental company Ohana, is reaching out to young voters with election-related jokes. The company is distributing flyers with these jokes, along with QR codes that lead to a registration page.

Concerns

As for voters' top concerns, a recent AP-NORC poll found that many are focused on the economy , health care, immigration, abortion and gun policy, while some are concerned about U.S. foreign policy.

Before the election, there was not a big gap between the two candidates, Vice President Harris and former President Donald Trump, on the economy. Polls showed that each candidate had about 40% support for who would do better on the economy. Meanwhile, about 10% had no confidence in either candidate on economic policy. About 80% said the economy was one of the most important issues when considering a vote. Observers said that the consequences of inflation rising sharply in 2022 to a four-decade high affected this year's presidential election.

On other issues, more than 50% of respondents said health care was their top concern, while nearly 50% said crime, immigration, abortion policy and gun policy were their top concerns. Only about a third considered climate change to be an important issue, and a quarter said the candidates’ policies on the Hamas-Israel conflict would influence their vote. The survey was conducted from September 12 to 6 among 1,771 registered voters with a margin of error of +/-3.4%.

Billionaires "pump" money

NBC News on September 22 cited the latest documents filed with the US Federal Election Commission showing that billionaires in the financial sector are among the biggest donors to the Republican Party, while technology billionaires strongly support the Democratic Party. Many billionaires opened their wallets in August, donating large sums of money to their favorite candidates, ahead of the November 5 election.

The largest individual contribution came from the Trump MAGA political action committee, with $10 million from billionaire Diane Hendricks, a building materials distributor. Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick and Elliott Management chairman Paul Singer each gave $5 million to MAGA. On the Democratic side, the Harris FF political action committee drew contributions from Facebook, Asana founder Dustin Moskovitz, Netflix founder Reed Hastings and others. Moskovitz gave $3 million, while Hastings gave $1 million.
