Passing on the profession to others is a joy, seeing his "students" have stable jobs is a precious reward for Mr. Nguyen Duy Long.

For the past 10 years, Mr. Nguyen Duy Long (living in Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi ) has opened free sewing classes for hundreds of disabled women and disadvantaged people in society with the sole hope of creating a job for them to make a living.

Empathetic

Coming to the sewing class of teacher Nguyen Duy Long (born in 1986; in lane 84, Kim Nguu street), you will see all female students and each of them has certain disabilities - some have disabilities in their legs, some have disabilities in their arms, some have slow cognition, but the common point is that they desire to learn a trade and come together here to study with a dedicated, highly specialized teacher.

Mr. Long's spacious, clean house is fully equipped with sewing and practice tools such as mannequins, sewing machines, overlock machines, pens, rulers, and colorful fabrics.

Long used to be a math major and wanted to study automobiles. When he was about to enter university, fate made him choose textile technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Graduating with a good degree, he was able to work in the field he was trained for. During his career, he witnessed many women in difficult circumstances in the countryside spending a lot of money to learn sewing but could not succeed. The main reason was that they had not met the right teacher.

Besides, his daughter is also the motivation for him to do this volunteer work. "Unfortunately, she was born with congenital cerebral palsy. I took her for treatment everywhere but it was not effective. I once intended to pass on all my knowledge and experience in sewing to my daughter but it was not possible, I was very sad. Many nights I thought about my daughter and cried for her. Because I wanted to do a meaningful job for the disabled, I opened the "Pho Xua" sewing class 10 years ago" - Mr. Long confided.

Most students who come to Mr. Long's class are like a blank page and have to start over, including many who have learned the profession elsewhere. "At first, I taught online, sharing free sewing video clips on social networks. Seeing that many people were interested and wanted to learn directly for easier understanding, I organized a sewing class at home," said Mr. Long.

Lighting up hope for the disadvantaged

For Mr. Long, the sewing class for disabled and disadvantaged female students in society is like his brainchild. Therefore, every time he teaches or holds hands to guide, he puts all his heart and conveys meticulously. Students have different types of disabilities, so he chooses the appropriate teaching method for each person. "Choosing the appropriate teaching method will help them not to be self-conscious during the learning process. Some students need to lower the table or add a gas pedal, adjust the machine accordingly. Some students are slow, so they have to be taught over and over again, but that's okay, as long as it helps students to learn conveniently" - Mr. Long confided.

In addition, Mr. Long always tries to act as an instructor, companion and learner, not putting pressure on students, but instead always creating a fun and exciting learning atmosphere. "During the teaching process, I said that this is a job for introverts, hard-working and passionate about sewing. From there, people spread the word and perhaps those things touched the hearts of disabled students. They felt it was suitable and came to me" - Mr. Long confided.

During the teaching process, Mr. Long creates a sense of closeness for everyone. Between teachers and students, there exists a close relationship like brothers in a family.

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong (Vinh Tuong district, Vinh Phuc province) has a congenital disability, one leg is normal, the other leg is atrophied. This makes her always self-conscious. Accidentally knowing about Mr. Long's class, she came to him. "Coming to him, I not only learned a profession but also received positive energy from him, to step out of my comfort zone. After 3 months of studying, I opened a small tailor shop at home, with a stable income" - Ms. Phuong said.

Ms. Vu Thi Lan (from Y Yen, Nam Dinh) is only 1.25 m tall and weighs 25 kg. She used to work as a photocopy girl, then she learned about Mr. Long's class and came to study. Now she has mastered the profession and opened a tailor shop at home called Tailor Shop 25, with an increasingly good income.

Besides, Mr. Long also received support from his parents for this "carrying prison and general goods" job. "My house is spacious, so to facilitate studying, my parents agreed to let the students stay at home and consider them as their own children" - Mr. Long said.

Saying goodbye to Mr. Long's Pho Xua tailoring class, I was filled with joy because in society there are "teachers" who are not in school, do not hold chalk, but are the ones who steer the boat of hope as he said: "The class brings hope to those whose lives have been unfinished. Through that, it helps them realize dreams that they did not dare to think of before"...

Dedicated to students

Student Nguyen Thi Nhu Theu said: "Before coming here to learn sewing, I studied in several places but it was not effective. Teacher Long teaches very easily and wholeheartedly, teaching until the students understand and can do it." Ms. Theu studied the basic class 4 years ago and now she has returned to study the advanced class to develop her work.

Up to now, the number of students who have attended Mr. Long's free tailoring class has reached hundreds, and countless others have attended his YouTube videos.
