'Finally, I've got to see her.'

Overcoming his family's concerns and societal prejudices, the young man from Thanh Hoa decided to marry the woman in a wheelchair.

"Now that you're like this, we... let's just forget about it."

Ten days have passed, but Bui Thi Hai Yen (from Ha Tinh province) still feels the same overwhelming emotion she felt on the day she wore that pristine wedding dress.

For a girl like Yen, who couldn't stand on her own two feet, a lifelong happiness seemed like a distant dream. But when she met Vi Van Duy (from Thanh Hoa province), a healthy, able-bodied young man with a heart full of affection, she believed that there's always a perfect match for anyone in this life.

The couple got married after dating for over a year.

Yen was born with legs weaker than normal. To be able to stand upright, she has to hold onto something sturdy.

Yen herself realized early on that she was less fortunate than her peers, but always thought positively: "Luckily, it's a congenital condition, so it's easier to adapt." With the love and support of family and friends, Yen's formative years passed peacefully.

"But sometimes I still feel insecure about myself. I can't walk, and it makes me so sad," Yen said.

In 2023, while working in Hanoi , Yen had the opportunity to meet Vi Van Duy – the love of her life.

They met while livestreaming to make friends on social media. From their first online interaction, they clicked. Yen found Duy handsome and charming, while Duy found Yen articulate and quick-witted.

They had a truly joyful and meaningful day.

Through text messages and video calls, they grew closer. Even without ever meeting, they confessed their feelings to each other. But until then, Duy still didn't know the truth about Yen's legs.

“I only knew her face from my phone screen. Then, one day, four months later, a friend told me that Yen couldn't walk normally anymore. I acted normal, but when Yen found out, she wanted to break up,” Duy recounted.

"I told him, 'Now that I'm like this, we... let's just end it.' Nobody wants to love or marry someone in a wheelchair. I initiated the breakup to spare him the awkwardness," Yen said.

Duy disagreed. To him, it didn't matter whether the girl walked or used a wheelchair. What mattered to him was her personality and compatibility between them.

Duy, who was working in Hai Duong at the time, took a bus to Hanoi to meet Yen. She had been waiting at the bus station since very early to greet him. Although it was their first meeting, they felt a sense of closeness and familiarity, as if they had known each other for a long time.

Some time later, Duy invited Yen to live with him in Hai Duong. Because of love, she decided to leave Hanoi and move to Hai Duong to work online so she could eat his home-cooked meals and receive his thoughtful care and attention.

The entire wedding venue was moved.

When Duy's parents learned that their son was in love with a girl in a wheelchair, they were worried and anxious. They didn't forbid the relationship outright, but they earnestly advised him to reconsider, saying that marrying a disabled girl was "choosing a difficult path for himself."

Duy traveled from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh to bring his bride home.

Duy firmly stated, "I will marry the woman I love." He ignored the gossip and criticism from others. For him, no one could make his own decisions about his happiness or suffering, so he had to decide his own life.

Only when he was sure there were no more obstacles did Duy bring Yen home to meet his family. She was welcomed by her boyfriend's family with openness and affection.

But when Yen went home to meet her family, the couple faced opposition. Yen's mother couldn't believe someone truly loved her daughter. She told Duy, "I can only adopt you as my son, but as my son-in-law... no way. With Yen in this state, how can you two get married?"

During their time in Ha Tinh, Duy simply cared for and looked after Yen as he normally did, and this "normalcy" touched Yen's parents. They agreed to let the young couple get married.

On March 19th, the couple officially tied the knot and became husband and wife. The bride, wearing a magnificent white dress, sat in a wheelchair waiting for the groom to come and take her to their new home.

The groom led a wedding procession of about 20 people from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh to pick up his wife. The moment the bride, in a wheelchair, walked down the aisle with the groom, the entire wedding hall was moved. Many people shed tears of joy for the couple's happiness.

"Finally, I've brought her home, and I'm so happy," Duy said.

The couple walked hand in hand on their wedding day.

Yen was moved by her mother's words of advice: "Now that you two are a couple, you must love each other and work together to build a happy life."

As for Anh Duy, the man who is now her husband and the father of the child she is carrying, Yen wants to express her gratitude: "Thank you for coming, staying, and loving me."
