Behind the controversial groom-less wedding in Hai Duong

Behind the wedding without the groom lies a love story filled with tolerance and sacrifice.

Ready for a long-distance relationship and waiting.

"It's been 1 year and 2 months since we first met, and we've only seen each other 4 times, totaling 8 hours of meeting time," shared Le Thi Phuong Thao (born in 2003, from Hai Duong province ), attracting much attention.

On the social media platform TikTok, Thảo calls herself "The support system for the naval soldier." Thảo's husband, Trần Đình Thụ (born in 1998, from Hải Dương province), currently works on a remote island.

Before tying the knot, the couple shared a love story filled with joy and also tears of longing.

Thao's husband was a soldier stationed in Quang Ninh. The couple met online in September 2023, when Thao was a student in Hung Yen .

She repeatedly refused to meet him. However, his sweet soul, compassionate nature, and sincerity touched her heart. From fearing a long-distance relationship, Thảo began to fall in love with the military uniform.

Before Thu went to the South for training, the couple met three times. Afterward, he confessed his love via text message and Thao accepted. In December 2023, as he was preparing to go to the island for duty, Thao visited him. That was their fourth meeting since they met.

"We've been dating for 1 year and 2 months, and we've only met 4 times, for a total of 8 hours. My parents have never even met him in person; they've only spoken to him via video call."

"His family enthusiastically supported our relationship. Because of that, I have more faith in this relationship," Thảo shared.

Thảo recalled that when they first started dating, she jokingly told her boyfriend, "I bet you'll have a hard time finding a girlfriend." She never imagined that she would later willingly give her heart to him, ready to be in a long-distance relationship and wait for him.

The wedding was held without the groom.

In June 2024, encouraged by both families, the couple decided to hold an engagement ceremony. Three months later, not wanting to miss the auspicious date, they held their wedding. However, the groom was absent on both of these important occasions due to work commitments far from home.

"The biggest reason I agreed to this marriage was my love for him, and then my love for the uniform he wears. My parents only said, 'You have to be prepared for a tough future,' but otherwise they are very proud of my husband's work," Thảo recounted.

Thảo's boyfriend works far from home, so she has to do everything alone. When she went to meet his family, she went alone. On the day of the engagement ceremony, Thảo was also alone with her family to welcome the groom's family.

Thao was loved wholeheartedly by her two mothers.

On her wedding day, the person who came to greet Thảo in her room wasn't her husband, but her mother-in-law. All the traditional rituals, such as pouring celebratory wine and cutting the wedding cake, were postponed.

“On his wedding day, he even lost phone signal so he couldn't call home. Happiness, sadness… everything turned into tears. When we heard the MC share the story of the soldier, everyone and I were deeply moved.”

"Of course, a wedding without the groom will attract rumors and gossip, but I don't mind. My family is strong like that," Thảo confided.

Thao and both families performed the wedding rituals.

After the wedding, Thao moved to live with her husband's parents, 7km away. Due to the distance and unreliable internet connection, for almost a year, she and her husband could only text and call each other, but couldn't video call to see each other's faces.

Both understood each other's feelings. Thao knew that while she felt lonely because she was far from her husband, he also felt lonely and homesick, being away from his family and wife. The young couple frequently called and texted each other to comfort and encourage one another.

"My husband once asked me, 'Do you find it difficult? Do you regret marrying me?' My answer was always the same: 'I've never regretted it because my husband is a wonderful person,'" Thảo shared.

The love and care of her parents-in-law also compensated for many things for Thảo. Knowing that their daughter-in-law sometimes felt down, her parents-in-law often encouraged and supported her. Thảo always believed that such wonderful people would have wonderful children.

Phuong Thao shared that her husband is currently on a sea voyage returning to the mainland, having completed a year of protecting the islands and seas. The couple is eagerly awaiting the moment they can be reunited.
