Besides the procession and sacrifice ceremonies, the festival with folk games is always awaited by everyone. These games not only bring a joyful atmosphere, but also contribute to preserving traditional culture, reflecting the concept of nature and the spirit of community solidarity.
Variety of folk games.
In the brilliant spring, when everyone has gathered, the games begin. First of all, there is the game of throwing con, a popular game of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups at the beginning of the year festival. Usually held on a large, flat land, people will set up a pole 15-20m high, on top of which is a circle about 50cm in diameter covered with colored paper.
Tung also attracted a large number of people to participate.
Players use a shuttlecock hand-sewn from scraps of fabric, stuffed with rice seeds, cotton or sand… The string and tassels are sewn from scraps of colorful fabric. The person who throws the shuttlecock accurately and tears the colored paper will win. According to folk beliefs, the shuttlecock symbolizes a wish for a year of favorable weather, peace and prosperity, and a bountiful harvest.
Another game that attracts a large number of locals and tourists is grass pulling, which is similar to “rock paper scissors”. This is a game that requires calculation, judgment and quick reflexes of the players.
Shows the player's judgment and quickness.
Each side forms a team of 2 or more people and then sends 1 representative for each turn to compete. Players spread their fingers without any rules and must match the rhythm, move their fingers at the same time as the opponent. Based on the judgment and read out loud the numbers in Han Nom language as follows: "nhat" is number 1, "nhi" is number 2, "slam" is number 3, "luc" is number 6..., the rule is that when calling out, there must be a tail, called "lay mi thang", for example, number 3 is called "slam tim slam", number 4 is "sle hong sle", number 6 is "looc woay looc"...
The way to play "grass cutting" is similar to rock-paper-scissors.
Players read out loud the numbers, if the sum of the two fingers equals the number read, they win. If one side loses consecutively without gaining any points, it is called “pac pan”, and will be punished twice. The side that wins 4 points wins, the losing side must drink a cup of wine... This game brings a lively, exciting atmosphere to both players and supporters. Many games last more than 10 minutes, creating drama as the two sides compete for the final score.
Blindfolded drumming.
In addition, blindfolded drumming is also a game with strong folk characteristics. This game is challenging, training the judgment and orientation of the players. Participants will be blindfolded, rotated a few times to lose direction, then hold a stick and move towards the drum to play according to the instructions of the people around. The game creates a lot of laughter and excitement for both players and audiences.
Children enjoy the monkey bridge game.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, a visitor to the spring festival in Bang Van commune, Ngan Son district, shared: “This year, the spring festival has a variety of games such as monkey bridge, shuttlecock tossing, blindfolded drumming... Folk games help people understand more about traditional culture and preserve national identity. When everyone is dependent on their phones these days, these games are an opportunity to connect the community and create a healthy space for entertainment.”
In the digital age, digital media makes real connections between people fade away. These games not only create a useful playground, help train health, quick thinking, but also help connect generations, preserve traditional values.
Coming to Bac Kan every spring, visitors can also experience many unique games such as: Blindfolded duck catching, dugout canoe racing... bringing excitement and joy, helping people to welcome a new year full of vitality and happiness.
