China's East China Normal University offers a Family Education course to help parents calmly handle problems when raising children.

Topics such as psychological stress and internet addiction are discussed in the course, according to an announcement last week by East China Normal University in Shanghai.

A total of 120 parents of children of various ages signed up for the class. To earn the certificate, they had to complete 100 hours of both online and in-person instruction over four months.

The course includes three core courses on family relationships, psychology, and personality development, as well as more than 20 elective courses. Parents can choose courses based on their child's age and the problem they want to solve. This is the first time the program has appeared in China.

Yan Hanbing, dean of the School of Open Education and Learning at East China Normal University, said parents today are more stressed than ever about raising their children. Therefore, the school integrates scientific knowledge and research to guide parents on how to stay calm and avoid being swept away by the hustle and bustle of life.

"The aim of the course is to help parents reduce stress, thereby making the relationship between parents and children more comfortable and enjoyable," she said.

Ms. Yan also highlighted how the course will help parents deal with some of today’s most pressing issues, such as the race to enroll their children in extra classes. The instructors will use research data to help parents understand the negative impact of this. Children are forced to spend all their time studying, thus losing motivation and interest in learning.

Parents will also learn the five common reasons why children become addicted to the internet, and how to tackle the problem from the root.

On the parents' side, when participating in the course, besides learning basic concepts and knowledge, they also expect to be guided on how to apply these lessons in practice.

Hao Zhaoqiang, whose child is in high school, believes that parents are always the most important teachers of children, and hopes the course will help him gain a deeper understanding of family education in raising children.

"I hope my changes can help my child be more optimistic about the future and become a person with a high sense of responsibility in society," he shared.

Professor He Lingfeng, who is in charge of the Personality Cultivation course, asserts that nothing is more important than parents building a strong bond with their children from a young age because their children's lifelong emotional stability depends on this.
