The move will be in place until Harvard agrees to comply with a series of demands from the White House, the latest in a series of tensions between the US government and America's oldest and wealthiest university.

In a letter sent to Harvard University on May 5, US Secretaryof Education Linda McMahon warned: "Harvard University should not continue to apply for funding from the federal government because no more funding will be provided."

Ms. McMahon’s letter revolves around the issue of student safety at Harvard University. Recently, a number of protests have taken place on the school. The participants are a part of the school’s students, expressing their views on some conflicts in the world .

These protests make some students feel unsafe in a learning environment that is considered to be of top quality in the United States.

Not only that, Ms. McMahon also believes that Harvard University is unfairly discriminatory in its admissions policy. She criticizes the remedial math courses that are intended to help students improve their math skills so that they can meet the requirements of the university program.

Ms McMahon sees this as evidence of unfairness in the admissions process. When applicants with weak math skills who need remedial work are admitted to a university known for its rigorous admissions process, while excellent applicants can still be rejected.

The letter also attacked Harvard's practice of inviting "problematic" guest lecturers to teach at the school, comparing it to "hiring the captain of the Titanic to teach navigation."

In closing, Ms. McMahon declared that Harvard University "will no longer be a publicly funded educational institution." The school will have to become financially independent as a private university, meaning it will have to spend from its own $53 billion endowment or solicit donations from wealthy alumni.

Previously, Harvard University decided to sue the federal government after having its $2.2 billion funding frozen, facing the risk of losing another $1 billion, possibly losing the right to recruit international students, and even risking losing its tax-exempt privileges.

Harvard University believes that the government’s demands could undermine its independence and autonomy in how it operates and makes decisions. Therefore, the university will not comply with the government’s demands and will pursue legal action to regain its rights.

In the lawsuit, Harvard University warned that freezing federal funding to the school would have serious consequences, as a series of medical and scientific research projects at the school could be suspended.
