The 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly opens its first plenary session.

The UN Secretary-General stressed that the UN General Assembly is an indispensable mechanism and an important path towards a peaceful and equitable future for all.

On the afternoon of September 10, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, the 79th United Nations General Assembly opened its first plenary session.

According to VNA correspondent in New York, Cameronian diplomat Philemon Yang delivered a speech at the opening session as President of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Accordingly, Mr. Yang called for increased international cooperation to address current cross-border challenges, such as climate change, conflict and armed violence.

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed that the international community is facing a world full of uncertainties; at the same time, he emphasized that the UN General Assembly is an indispensable mechanism and an important path towards a peaceful and equal future for all. The opening session is expected to last from September 10-30.

One of the most important events of the United Nations in 2024 is the Future Summit, which will be held on September 22-23.

The Summit is an opportunity for world leaders to discuss a range of pressing global issues, reaffirm their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Charter, strengthen cooperation and lay the foundation for a renewed multilateral system.

The conference also aims for a Future Compact to strengthen global cooperation and effectively respond to recent challenges for the benefit of all.

Meanwhile, the first day of the High-Level Week of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly will begin on September 24, with the participation of heads of state and senior officials of United Nations member countries.

The theme of this year's High-level General Debate is “Leaving No One Behind: Working Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.”

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly marks an important milestone in the international community's efforts to accelerate progress towards the achievement of the 17 SDGs.
