Speaking immediately after his chosen negotiators abruptly walked out of a meeting with White House officials, House Speaker McCarthy said the House needed action from the White House, and when no action was seen, negotiations had to be suspended.
Representative Garret Graves, who is leading the Republican negotiations in the House, left the meeting and said the talks were "ineffective."
Meanwhile, a White House official acknowledged that there are “real differences” and that “the negotiations will be difficult.”
Meanwhile, on May 20, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Joe Biden remains confident despite “real disagreements” with Republicans in the negotiations to raise the US debt ceiling.
Speaking in Hiroshima, Japan, where President Biden was attending the G7 summit, Jean-Pierre affirmed that "real disagreements continue to exist" between the two sides, but "the President believes there is still a way forward."
