Statistics Canada (Statscan) reported that in 2022, the country's population increased by a record 1.05 million people, bringing the total to 39.57 million. Approximately 96% of this increase was due to international migration.
This increase helps Canada maintain its position as the fastest-growing population among the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations. In 2022, the country's population grew at 2.7%, a rate that is expected to double in approximately 26 years.
According to Reuters, immigrants play a crucial role in boosting the economy of a nation with an aging population like Canada. Since 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has implemented numerous measures to attract immigrants with the aim of expanding its workforce.
In 2022, Canada welcomed 437,180 immigrants. The total number of temporary residents in the country also increased by 607,782 in the same year. Statscan stated that these figures, representing the highest increase ever recorded in history, reflect the country's ambitious immigration targets.
However, Statistics Canada has highlighted several potential future challenges if the population growth trend in 2022 continues. The agency stated: “The increase in permanent and temporary immigrants could also present challenges related to housing, infrastructure, transportation, and service provision,” CNN reported.
According to the three-year plan announced in November 2022, the Canadian government wants to continue increasing its annual immigration targets, aiming to grant permanent residency to 465,000 people in 2023 and to increase that target to 500,000 people in 2025.
