Difficulties and challenges in purchasing and harvesting durian in Dak Lak

Dak Lak Province, known as the “durian capital” of Vietnam, enters its main harvest season from August to September every year. This is the time when durians are at their best quality, with famous growing areas such as Krong Pac, Cu M’gar, Ea H’leo and Krong Nang providing large quantities for the domestic and export markets.

However, the durian crop in Dak Lak in recent years has faced many difficulties and challenges. The massive and uncontrolled expansion of durian cultivation has led to many problems such as breaking planning, increasing pests and diseases, and putting pressure on water resources. Moreover, food quality and safety have become difficult problems to solve.

Some gardeners have abused pesticides, along with fraudulent codes of growing areas and packaging facilities, which have reduced the reputation and brand of Dak Lak durian in the market, especially in export markets such as China and other demanding markets. Increasingly strict requirements on traceability, pesticide residues, and plant quarantine standards from importing countries have created great pressure, requiring the durian industry to comprehensively restructure.
