The market is generally "quiet", purchasing power is slow and purchasing prices at warehouses remain low to medium, especially for common goods.

Durian price in the Southwest - Mekong Delta

In the Southwest region - Mekong Delta, the price of Ri6 durian type A fluctuates between 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg, type B from 30,000 - 32,000 VND/kg and type C at 25,000 - 28,000 VND/kg.

For Thai durian, grade A is purchased at 78,000 - 82,000 VND/kg, the highest grade VIP A is 95,000 VND/kg, a slight decrease compared to the previous period. The premium grade Musang King still holds the highest price in the region, from 110,000 - 115,000 VND/kg.

Durian price in Southeast

In the Southeast, Ri6 durian type A is slightly higher, fluctuating at 44,000 - 48,000 VND/kg. Thai durian prices of all kinds also remain stable, of which VIP still fluctuates around 90,000 - 95,000 VND/kg. Musang King varieties here are equivalent to the West, with the highest price reaching 115,000 VND/kg.

Durian price in the Central Highlands

In the Central Highlands, durian prices are not much different from those in the West. Ri6 type A is at 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg, Thai type A is from 78,000 - 82,000 VND/kg, Thai type C is the lowest at only 40,000 VND/kg, reflecting weak purchasing power in this region.

Currently, despite being in the main harvest season, the market is still quite quiet due to slowing exports and strict inspection requirements from China. Meanwhile, abundant supply is putting pressure, making it difficult for prices to increase again in the short term.

Vietnam's durian growth exceeds planning

In just a decade, the durian growing area nationwide has increased explosively, from 32,000 hectares in 2015 to nearly 179,000 hectares in 2024, a more than 5-fold increase. Output also reached more than 1.5 million tons, an increase of 2.5 times compared to 2020.

However, the rapid growth has far exceeded the planning in the Project for developing key fruit trees to 2025 and 2030, leading to a series of consequences regarding product quality, traceability and pressure on food safety control.

After Vietnam signed the Protocol on Official Durian Export with China in 2022, this industry immediately exploded, reaching an export value of over 3 billion USD in 2024. However, in just the first 4 months of 2025, durian exports fell sharply by 66.6% in value, of which the Chinese market alone fell by more than 75%.

The main reason is the decrease in consumption demand in China, and increasingly fierce competition from Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. In particular, strict requirements for controlling cadmium and Yellow O content make it difficult for Vietnamese durian. While Thailand has successfully negotiated to reduce the inspection frequency to 30%, Vietnamese goods are still inspected 100% of the batches.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (before the merger) directed the Plant Protection Department to implement solutions to reduce cadmium from the end of 2024. Many models have been deployed in Tien Giang, focusing on solutions such as raising soil pH, using biological products and intercropping mint to fix cadmium in the soil. The Ministry also announced more than 60 types of "safe" fertilizers to limit the accumulation of heavy metals.

At the same time, the Ministry is developing a new circular on the management of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities, increasing surprise inspections of facilities at risk of violations, upgrading testing capacity, and actively negotiating with China to reduce the frequency of inspections.

In the long term, the Vietnamese durian industry is oriented to restructure towards increasing the proportion of frozen products, promoting deep processing, building national brands and diversifying export markets, towards Japan, Korea, the EU and the US.
