Durian season is good but price is worrying, export is difficult due to tightening inspection
Currently, farmers in Binh Phuoc are entering the main durian harvest season with the joy of a bumper crop thanks to favorable weather. However, that joy is quickly overshadowed by worries about a bumper crop and falling prices as this year’s durian purchase price has dropped sharply compared to the same period last year.
The biggest challenge now comes from the Chinese market as the country tightens its inspection requirements. The inspection rate for each shipment has increased to 100%, instead of 10% as before, with special attention paid to checking for heavy metal residues such as cadmium and yellow O. The prolonged inspection causes goods to be congested at the border gate, affecting quality and increasing storage costs.
Faced with this situation, in early 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Phuoc (now the Department of Agriculture and Environment) issued a document requesting localities, affiliated units, growing area codes and packaging facilities to strengthen supervision and strictly inspect the production and packaging process.
The provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has also issued a document urging the implementation of measures to control growing areas and packaging facilities. Accordingly, these units must apply good agricultural practices (GAP), ensuring food safety, product quality and clear traceability.
The use of pesticides must also comply with the permitted list in Vietnam, and absolutely do not use active ingredients prohibited according to the regulations of the importing country.
