On the morning of June 12, the National Assembly officially passed a historic resolution on the merger of provincial-level administrative units. Accordingly, the country has 28 provinces and 6 centrally-run cities.

Among the 6 centrally-run cities, Da Nang, after merging with Quang Nam, has an area of nearly 11,860 km2, becoming the largest city in Vietnam, surpassing both Ho Chi Minh City (6,772.6 km2) and Hanoi (3,359.8 km2).

So, what is the economic scale of the new Da Nang city?

According to preliminary data from the General Statistics Office, the scale of GRDP (gross regional product) of Da Nang (combined with Quang Nam) at current prices in 2023 will reach VND 250,657 billion and increase to VND 280,307 billion in 2024.

With 280,307 billion VND, Da Nang's GRDP scale ranks after Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong and Can Tho, only higher than Hue City's GRDP.

Regarding domestic budget revenue, according to preliminary statistics in 2023, Da Nang reached 39,862.1 billion VND, ranking 4th out of 6 cities in our country.

In terms of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), in 2023, Da Nang only attracted 261.4 million USD in registered FDI capital.

Statistics from the Customs Department also show that Da Nang's export turnover will reach nearly 3.68 billion USD in 2023 and nearly 4.05 billion USD in 2024. This figure is quite modest compared to the export turnover of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Hai Phong.

However, after the merger, Da Nang is a city that owns 2 large airports.

Chu Lai Airport is the largest airport in the Central region and is in the top 3 largest airports in the country with over 2,000 hectares. This airport is located in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, 2km from the sea and on the shore of Dung Quat Bay.

According to the Quang Nam Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, Chu Lai International Airport will be built with a scale of 4F airport. The estimated capacity is about 10 million passengers/year by 2030, and about 30 million passengers/year by 2050.

Chu Lai Airport will become an international aviation industry and service center with passenger and cargo transportation and aviation logistics activities; linked with high-tech industrial parks, forming a center for manufacturing and processing high-value technology products and import and export by air.

After the merger, Da Nang is the largest city in our country, owning 2 large airports.

Meanwhile, Da Nang International Airport in 2024 is expected to transport nearly 13.5 million passengers; cargo and parcel output is estimated at 32,432 tons.

In 2025, continue to implement a number of key projects such as: Cargo Terminal - Da Nang International Airport, expected land use area of 28,745.9m2, handling capacity of 100,000 tons of cargo/year; infrastructure construction project of the remaining land area north of the airport; expansion of terminal T1.

According to experts, the merger helps synchronize traffic infrastructure, develop logistics, transportation, and trade, because Da Nang has an international airport and seaport but little industrial land, while Quang Nam has Ky Ha port, Chu Lai economic zone...

This will create a large economic zone with advantages in industry, services, high-quality resort tourism and agriculture. At the same time, this area will attract many FDI enterprises, especially in high-tech, automobile, electronics and tourism industries.
