Open market
At the conference on trade promotion and connection of agricultural product consumption between Hai Phong City and Can Tho City held on June 3 in Hai Phong City, Mr. Ha Vu Son said that, in the face of many difficulties in durian export, promoting consumption in the domestic market is considered very necessary to help gardeners consume durian during the peak harvest season. Hai Phong City is a market with a lot of potential with a developed system of commercial centers and supermarkets with 11 commercial centers (including Aeon Mall with a scale of 9.3 hectares), 28 supermarkets, 167 convenience stores, wholesale markets, ... hoping to boost consumption for durian growers, opening up new consumption markets. Hopefully, from this connection in the future, a strong distribution channel will be created to exchange and consume agricultural products between the two localities.
Durian promotion activities at the Can Tho durian product connection and consumption festival in Hai Phong city.
According to Mr. Ha Vu Son, vacuum-packed processed durian (peeled) can be preserved and transported conveniently. With 3 flights/week between Can Tho - Hai Phong, it is a favorable condition to connect the consumption of goods between the two localities. Here, the Director of the Industry and Trade Department of Can Tho City also proposed that Hai Phong support the organization of the Durian Consumption Festival in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta; at the same time, calling for the participation of businesses and people of Hai Phong to consume this specialty fruit.
In recent times, trade promotion activities between the two cities have had many positive results. The Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City has organized many delegations to participate in trade connection conferences in Can Tho City, thereby establishing cooperative relationships between businesses of the two cities and the southern provinces and cities. Many enterprises in Hai Phong have been playing an important role in bringing Can Tho agricultural products to the Northern market and exporting, typically Minh Khai Trading Joint Stock Company, Duong Minh Import-Export Joint Stock Company are units that regularly import and distribute seasonal fruits, processed agricultural products, rice and processed seafood products such as red tilapia, snakehead fish, eel, striped catfish, frog, basa fish, catfish, jellyfish, shrimp, field crab, etc. Along with that, many other typical products of Can Tho City such as rice, rice paper, etc. are also available at the supermarket system in Hai Phong, contributing to expanding the market share for goods from the Southwest region in the Northern Coastal region.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City, said that he is ready to coordinate to support the consumption of durian and agricultural products of Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region. Hai Phong will mobilize the existing distribution system such as supermarkets, wholesale markets, retail enterprises, etc. to support the consumption of durian as well as products and specialties from Can Tho. At the same time, the locality will also coordinate to propagate to organizations such as the Farmers' Association, the Cooperative Alliance, and the Labor Federation to expand consumption channels. Mr. Thanh emphasized that strengthening the consumption system in the domestic market is considered a sustainable solution for agricultural production. Vietnam with a population of 100 million people is a very large market. If exploited well, this will be a solid foundation for domestic production, especially agricultural products. In fact, many types of Vietnamese agricultural products have penetrated and been accepted in demanding markets such as Europe and the US, and can completely meet the increasing demands of domestic consumers.
"Shake hands" to cooperate
On June 10, at Can Tho International Airport, 400kg of vacuum-packed Ri 6 durian segments (in an order of 2 tons) were transported to Hai Phong City for consumption during the Can Tho durian product connection and consumption festival in Hai Phong City organized by the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City in coordination with the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City (June 11). This is a cooperation between the 99 Clean Durian Store (Can Tho City) and Duong Minh Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Hai Phong City). The first order is about 2 tons of segments, vacuum-packed. The durian selected is the Ri6 durian variety for natural ripening, mainly from gardens in Phong Dien District, Can Tho City, with traceable origin. This quantity of goods is transported in batches by air from Can Tho to Hai Phong to ensure fresh quality. To support this cooperation, Vietjet Air joins hands to support transportation costs with a 30% discount.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Su, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho City, emphasized that expanding the consumption market, especially in the northern provinces, is an important direction for the sustainable development of the durian industry, especially when the current situation of durian export is facing many difficulties. Faced with this situation, the leaders of the Department of Industry and Trade of Can Tho proposed promoting regional linkages, investing in cold storage systems, preliminary processing, and deep processing, and at the same time recommending the construction of a unified traceability system to improve competitiveness. Mr. Su also said that the city is aiming to develop brands and geographical indications for durian in potential markets such as China, the United States, the EU, and Japan.
Mr. Le Ngoc Lan, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong City, affirmed that Hai Phong always attaches importance to developing trade along with protecting consumer rights, especially in the field of agricultural products. The Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong determined that this is not only a timely trade promotion activity, but also a long-term step in establishing links between production localities and key consumption markets. Hai Phong is ready to accompany Can Tho as well as the Western provinces in expanding distribution channels, thereby contributing to stabilizing the domestic agricultural supply chain.
Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Trang, Director of Duong Minh Import-Export Joint Stock Company, said that it is an honor to accompany the Industry and Trade Department of the two localities in bringing high-value products such as durian to domestic and foreign consumers. The company is committed to transparency in prices, ensuring quality and continuing to expand its products, distribution network, and extensive cooperation with the retail system in Hai Phong in the coming time. Not only stopping at durian, the leaders of the two Departments of Industry and Trade agreed to continue to coordinate in organizing many programs to promote the consumption of other typical products of Can Tho such as rice, mango, and snakehead fish, while expanding the introduction of OCOP products, typical goods of Hai Phong, into the Can Tho market.
Can Tho City currently has about 7,762 hectares of durian, of which more than 4,500 hectares have produced fruit, with an estimated output of about 50,000 tons in 2025. Can Tho currently has 94 durian growing area codes that have been granted, but only 61 codes have been approved by China. However, the city only has one packaging facility that meets the conditions to be granted an export code to the Chinese market.
