After the first rains of the season on the white plateau of Bac Ha ( Lao Cai province), cool water from the stream begins to flow, seeping through each layer of rice fields.
The flood season - a familiar name for the highland people - has returned, awakening the entire mountainous region that is busy preparing for the new crop.
The terraced fields are gradually covered with a layer of clear water, sparkling in the sunlight, creating a magnificent natural picture that makes anyone who witnesses it amazed.
From May to June every year, when the first summer rains fall, water from the springs flows to irrigate the parched fields.
In the mountainous Northwest region, including Bac Ha district, people only grow one rice crop per year due to the cold climate and limited water resources. Therefore, the flood season is not only an important agricultural production time, but also brings a unique beauty, a “specialty” of the Northwest mountains and forests.
Amidst the early morning mist, terraced fields in the communes of Thai Giang Pho, Hoang Thu Pho, Ban Lien, Ta Cu Ty... appear soft, winding around the hillside. Water is led into each field, making the entire hillside appear as if it is plated with silver under the sun. Unlike the brilliant golden rice season, the water pouring season has a quiet, wild color, but is still shimmering and charming - typical of the Northwest.
For the Mong, Tay and many other ethnic groups living in the Bac Ha highlands, this is a busy but spirited time. Herds of buffaloes diligently plow the terraced fields – places that modern machinery has difficulty accessing.
People, families go to the fields together. Some build banks, some plant rice seedlings, some clear weeds... The sound of laughter mixed with the sound of flowing water and buffalo wading in the mud creates a simple and warm symphony of labor in the Northwest.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bac Ha district, this year's crop, the whole district planted about 3,600 hectares of rice, mainly varieties of Khau Meo, Tam Thom, Dai Thom, Seng Cu, BC15, LC25... These rice varieties not only have high yield but also bring delicious quality rice, helping people in the highlands have enough food, not worry about hunger during the lean season.
The picture of the water pouring season in Bac Ha appears shimmering like a painting, attracting tourists and signaling a new harvest season for the people of the highlands.
Only when you set foot here, standing in the middle of the vast rice fields, watching the curves of the terraced fields reflecting the sky, clouds and sunlight, inhaling the smell of mud, the smell of new grass... can you truly feel the vibrant and magical beauty of this land.
Not noisy, not flashy, Bac Ha flood season quietly holds people's feet with its rustic, pristine beauty, and with the sincerity of the people here.
