Research on building a toolkit for assessment, forecasting morphological changes and solutions to stabilize beaches in the Central Central region

On November 17, 2025, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a meeting of the Council for evaluation and acceptance of the national science and technology task: "Research on developing a toolkit for assessment, forecasting morphological changes and solutions to stabilize beaches in the Central Central region", code DTĐL.CN-42/22.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet, on behalf of the research team, presented a summary of the research content and results of the task.

The Central Coast region, with more than 430 km of sandy coastline and many estuaries and lagoons, is the most sensitive area in Vietnam to meteorological and hydrological impacts. In recent years, this area has been continuously affected by storms, tropical depressions, large waves and rising waters, causing deep erosion, silting up river mouths, destroying infrastructure and narrowing beach space.

The strong seasonal fluctuations in wave-tide-current regimes, combined with urban-tourism development and unsynchronized political works, are increasing the imbalance of sediment and risks to coastal socio- economics . This challenge becomes more urgent in the context of administrative boundary adjustment from July 1, 2025, requiring an inter-regional approach, sharing data and unified modeling tools along the entire coastline.

To aim at enhancing management efficiency and developing an integrated toolkit for monitoring - evaluating - forecasting coastal morphology that is of urgent significance both scientifically and practically , the Ministry of Science and Technology has approved the project. " Research on building a toolkit to assess, forecast morphological changes and solutions to stabilize beaches in the Central Central region " (code DTĐL.CN-42/22), with 3 objectives:

Building an integrated toolkit to assess and forecast morphological changes of Central Central beaches;

Clarifying the hydrodynamic regime and the mechanism of regional beach transformation;

Experimental application to guide stability solutions for My Khe beach (Da Nang).

Results achieved of the mission:

Report on assessment of the current status of morphological change mechanism of beaches in the Central Central region ;

Database of terrain, meteorological and hydrological conditions for the research area, detailed for My Khe beach area, Da Nang ;

Toolkit for assessing and forecasting morphological changes of typical beaches in the Central Central region ;

Report on assessment of hydrodynamic regime, morphological change mechanism of typical beaches in the Central Central region ;

Report on orientation of stable solutions for some degraded beaches in the Central Central region and My Khe ;

Summary report and summary report .

Register 01 useful solution;

04 publications in international journals listed in SCI/SCIE/SCOPUS ;

04 publications in international conferences or domestic specialized journals ;

Participate in postgraduate training : Training 01 Master and supporting training of 02 PhD students.

The results of the project not only contribute to improving the capacity of coastal research and management, but also aim at the goal of sustainable development of Vietnam's coastal resources in the context of increasingly evident climate change and sea level rise.

National Acceptance Assessment Council.

The members of the Acceptance Council highly appreciated the contributions of the Chairman and the Presiding Agency; the summary report and the summary report had a reasonable structure, in accordance with the requirements of a scientific report. The quantity, volume, progress and quality of the products all met the requirements of the task.

With the results achieved, the Council unanimously accepted the topic as "Excellent". At the same time, the research team was required to absorb the content and make appropriate edits, complete the dossier and submit it to the Ministry of Science and Technology to issue a decision to recognize the results of the task.
