Cambodia boosts durian exports, targeting Chinese market
While the domestic durian market is temporarily stable, Cambodia is accelerating the development of the durian industry with the ambition to conquer the Chinese market - one of the largest and most potential destinations.
According to The Star, Cambodian farmers are actively expanding their acreage and investing in quality control of durians. Kampong Cham province has become a bright spot thanks to its fertile red basalt soil, suitable for large-scale farming. A typical example is Boeung Ket farm run by Mr. Siv Tha, where customers can directly enter the garden to pick the fruit - a model that helps increase consumer confidence amid concerns about chemical-laced durians.
Mr. Siv Tha said the farm is growing three different varieties of durian and has prepared documents to apply for official export licenses to China. He affirmed: “Customers want to witness the clean production process with their own eyes. Picking durian at the garden not only creates an experience but also affirms the quality and safety.”
Cambodia aims to start exporting fresh durian to China from 2026. If the process goes smoothly, durian prices in this country will be pushed higher, putting significant pressure on the Vietnamese durian industry - which is also in the process of diversifying its export markets.
