Located 56 nautical miles (approximately 110 km) southeast of Phan Thiet city, Phu Quy Island, an island district of Binh Thuan province with an area of only about 17.82 km2, is becoming a very popular tourist destination.
Phu Quy Island is known as a remote island, possessing many scenic spots that still retain their pristine beauty, with the potential to develop diverse types of tourism (especially marine ecotourism, cultural and religious tourism), and friendly, hospitable people. Aiming to effectively exploit the potential and advantages of the island district's sea, Binh Thuan province decided to recognize Phu Quy as a provincial-level tourist area in mid-2020. Recently, after the expressway section passing through Binh Thuan officially opened, along with convenient travel from the mainland to the island, Phu Quy tourism is predicted to have the opportunity to create a breakthrough in development.
Arriving on the island at the end of May 2023, we were surprised by the rapid changes in Phu Quy, which we learned were largely due to the positive impact of tourism. Currently, there are 5 passenger ships operating on the Phan Thiet - Phu Quy route (including: Superdong-PQI, Superdong-PQII, Phu Quy Express, Tuan Chau Express-II, and Trung Trac), bringing thousands of tourists to the island for relaxation and entertainment during peak holiday seasons. To date, the district also has more than 150 establishments providing accommodation for tourists, of which one-third are hotels and guesthouses with nearly 650 rooms. In addition, there are many accompanying services such as motorbike rentals, SUP paddling and scuba diving instruction, and investments in restaurants and eateries to meet the needs of those exploring the destination and enjoying the famous seafood specialties of this remote island…
Besides historical sites and unmissable landmarks such as Van An Thanh, the flagpole affirming national sovereignty, Trieu Duong Bay, Ganh Hang, Cao Cat Mountain, etc., almost every place on this island is an ideal check-in spot for tourists. With its competitive appeal, Phu Quy tourism is gradually showing the characteristics of a rising "star," a destination that tourists from all over the world want to explore and experience to create beautiful memories.
However, the rapid growth in tourist numbers in recent times has also posed numerous challenges for local authorities and the tourism industry. These include investing in infrastructure development to meet the needs for accommodation, dining, and entertainment, while preserving the pristine and unique character of the "pearl island." Simultaneously, solutions are needed to ensure the security and safety of tourists, address the issue of uncollected and untreated waste, and manage service quality and pricing effectively as the number of visitors continues to flock to Phu Quy.
